Arrow Look at these pics of my turbo

What could have caused this on my fp black? The car WAS running meth (taking off for new motor) but even still I dont see why one side of the splined turbo bolt looks like its melted smooth and the other side is fine and has nice sharp points, since it does spin afterall ...I have had the turbo off before and it wasnt like this.

Never had any turbo issues that I knew of and no shaft play...
Bottom line is....Is this safe to use or could this cause an out of balance issue? If its only cosmetic damage I dont care but I dont want something coming apart and little metal parts going into my new motor

Thanks

That is where they balance the wheels/shaft upon assembly. It was like that before, you just didn't notice. It's perfectly fine and normal.

I don't think that is 'perfectly fine and normal.' With the splines rounded off on one side, how would you remove the nut that holds the turbine wheel on? It looks like there is actual damage to the nut and the turbine wheel.

The exhaust wheel and shaft are one piece. The nut is on the compressor side. You would just use a vise to hold the shaft, it's not that tight.

You have a new motor, buy a new turbo. That thing looks like it has been in the bottom of the ocean for 100 years. Ask yourself, is it worth the damages it could do to the engine? ^^

That's the last part before the exhaust pipe. It's not gonna hurt anything. If the bearing feels fine, slap it back on and rock-n-roll!

I agree it looks like crap but I had also asked Robert from FP Turbos directly and he said the same thing, that it is meant for the balancing and the coloring is from additives in the fuel/using E85 or a race gas or something with additives in the fuel (I was running meth) and that the accumulation on the blades can be from too much fuel or not hard enough running on the turbo. I put on 30k miles in one year and did not run it hard since I couldnt risk it breaking since it was my daily driver to work which was 52 miles each way, mainly highway miles. With the new motor I will have cleaned and flowed injectors, full engine rebuild and new tune from a reputable evo tuner. I have no worries of any issues with it.

He also basically said dont believe people on the internet cause who knows who they could be, could be taking advice from a 14 yr old kid haha I asked if I should bother cleaning the blades and he said just leave it and they will clean up when it is running properly....

Honestly I had a different issue with my Red but instead of getting a 50/50 answer on here I contacted FP directly and sent it back to them for a checkup. I was pretty sure that it was OK but figured I’d call them to get their professional opinion. They told me they’d check it out for free.My turbo ended up being good however they said for about $40 they could re-balance the rotating assembly since it was there, I took it. Other than that I paid shipping both ways.
I talked to both Brian and Amber and they were great to deal with. The turnaround wasn't bad either, my motor was still at the shop so I wasn't in any hurry. At least I was sure the turbo I was putting back on my fresh motor was good.Hope that helps.

Looks like you got some heat erosion but I wouldn't say the turbine is 'ruined'
I'm 100% it will still work with out much notice
