Which Oil Filter?
#61
Im gonna change my oil for the first time ever today. I bought a 2 ton jack and 15quart oil pan. I will use 5 quarts of mobil 1 10W-30 an M1-108 mobil filter. Is there anything I should know before doing this. WHere do I jack it up from. Do I need jack stands or will it be fine just using a jack ?
Thnx for the help guys,

You can use the factory front passenger jack location, or a floor jack. With a floor jack there is a nice spot right in the middle under the engine; you'll see it.
Make sure you change the crush washer on the drain plug. Don't use 5 quarts; it's supposed to be 4.85 quarts. So put in 4 and most of the fifth and check it.
If it's the first time you'll need and oil filter wrench, cuz they put it on super tight from the factory. Other than that you should be golden. Take your time. You may need a screw driver, like I did, to remove some of the underbody plastic protective peices too. Easy to remove and replace though!
Good luck!

i went to the dealership, they only had to newer ones, no more 356000s ... the new one works fine and fits snug but its not leaking, which is good. No biggy. Be sure to get some crush washers when u pick up your oil filters guys!

Given how eager Mitsu is to void warranties, why would anyone use anything but OEM? Even if the aftermarket piece is superior, they will argue that any and all engine problems were due to not using the Mitsu filter. You will be stuck trying to gather the necessary science to support your theory that the filter was irrelevant to the subsequent problem.

It seeems it is made by Denso who makes quality parts. Also, the thing that interested me the most was the fact that if the filter media is too good, this prevents the oil from passing through filter media and instead goes through the bypass valve, which means you are running unfiltered oil. With these higher revving motors with many sensitive bearings(turbine) I feel that I would rather have good pressure throughout the motor, not high pressure at the filter trying to get the oil through restrictive filter media, then dumping oil (unfiltered) through the bypass. From the articles that I read, most of the filters are made by the same company anyways. Some that seem to stand out more when cut open seem to be Donaldson and Baldwin filters. Just my 2cents

Is it one of those plastic flying saucer looking wrenches? I bought one of those to take of the old one and the "new" filters are too big for it so I had to buy a second one. For this car those work really well though.

Jackstands are cheap, and they make sure your head isn't crushed (literally) when a hydraulic jack fails.

I didn't use them this time but will in the future. I am kind of fond of my head.
The wrench is a black cup shaped thing that fits the old filter part very well. Should I go exchange it? This is lame, mitsu should have used at least the same dimensions.

I'd keep the one you have and go to Wal-Mart and get the bigger one. You might want to run another filter at some point which will (guaranteed) require you have the tool you took back. You can't have enough tools. I think the one I got there was less than 3 bucks. Has a nice steel insert for the extension end too. The all plastic ones strip out eventually.
