expensive accesory belt failure, a cuaitonary tale

Just wanted to share what ahppened to me today..

To start from the begining..
two months ago we changed the cambelt on my car. During that process, I had problems removing the crank pulley and damaged it a bit.

After installing the new belts I noticed a funny sound coming from the belt area.. We removed the acccesory belt and it went away... So the damaged bit was producing the sound.
As a result I bit the bullit and ordered a fluidampr pulley. Unfortunately, a month later, I am still waiting for the pulley to come. So, this happened today..

I drove slowly around town and suddenly I heard a sound of a breaking accesory belt.. I just managed to put a clutch in, and the engine stopped..

We took the car to the shop and this is what I found..

Part of the accesory belt got stuck around the cambelt pulley... Of course the crank slipped and knocked the valves..
I hoped the valves were the only casualities but this is what I found under the valve cover:

All rockers were knocked out, cams have damage on them. I suspect the lifters are shot too.

I allready asked english racing for an offer for the head parts (GSC S1, rockers, lifters, studs, gaskets) to go togeather with the HTA 71 I have and just planned to put on the car.

I am also thinking of forging the engine, while it is out.. or putting in stroker but I am worried how it would work with the 71, and I have no budget for larger turbo now..

bummer... take care of your accesory belts.

Im confused as to how your accessory belt made its way into the timing belt? Sucks to see the carnage. Good luck on your build.

actually, it was only half of it. IT broke length wise and slid towards the engine.. other half staid on.... real weird..

The good thing is the head still looks useable. The pistons look ok, although it looks in that last pic like the valves might have kissed the piston top a bit. It shouldn't be an issue though.

x2. Unless we're talking the balance shaft belt, the outer belt has no way of entering the timing covers, or does it?
