Letsgetthisdone's method is the same principle, and filling through the drain ensures you get enough fluid in to allow the excess to drain, which is the key to getting the proper level. There's no magic volume, let the case tell you how much is required.
Which way are you tilting the car? Towards the driver's side? I don't know if I'd feel safe doing that.

Over 10 yrs filling through the "FILL" (amazing it's even called a fill hole). Never one issue.

When I first read shops claiming it necessary to fill through the "DRAIN" hole it was certainly a good laugh. Needless to say they'll never see my parts for work. Derp.

Put ~.6 qt in through the fill hole, that's what it takes to fill, you'll have no issue

Takes me 5 minutes to fill through the drain. The fluid doesn't burp back out, theres no waiting for fluid to settle while I fill. Just pump the bottle in, plug it up with a quickness, drive it, and double check. I used to fill through the "fill" hole. First time I did it through the drain, I had to ask myself why the hell did I not try this forever ago.

i like it, too. my ONLY complaint is that is more of a mess... but not TOO bad if i'm quick with the plug LOL.

I've always filled in the fill hole with no issues, but next time I might try through the drain.

... me too.

I measure the volume of fluid I pump in, so I know it took.
The trick I've learned is once you are close to ~3/4 full you need to be very very slow as you pump it in to prevent it from spilling out.
The fill hole can not take a lot of fluid at once because of the thickness.

i've done both too. so far, so good.

either way i do it, i pump it in slow, drive around the block a couple times, then recheck. i think as long as it's full on the recheck, you are fine.

Just to bump this, I didnt take my t case fully apart, but when I drained it when I took the engine out Im just hoping that some of the fluid stayed in it... Because I couldnt get more than a half quart in there and that was raising only the passengers side of the car and letting it set for a loooong time.

I drove it around the block and let it set for a few days while I was out of town.
Last night I raised it on stands, made sure and raised the front and back stands 3 notches so the frame was even front to back, pulled the fill plug and a lot globbed out.. I put the fill plug back in while some was still coming out just to be safe.
Now Im kind of worried that maybe I let too much come out after reading this...

Are you guys pulling the fill plug out with it on the ground or with the frame rails level?

I have put 36 miles on it since pulling the fill plug off and its a 12 mile drive home. I will check it again tonight and hopefully more comes out still.

The level only needs to be even with the fill plug opening. So, it fluid was still coming out when you plugged it up, you're good to go. You pull the fill plug with the car level to check the fluid. I wouldn't check it again. If fluid was still running out when you put the plug back in, that means it was slightly "over" filled, which is a good thing.

I level the car out on jack stands. Once it's full, I drop the front of the car first and put an extra squirt of fluid, just to be on the safe side. Then I plug it up and drop the rear of the car.

I've filled it it from the top, driven the car to circulate fluid, then lifted the car to recheck and I've filled it by pumping in from the bottom until it comes out the fill hole. Both methods seem to work when done correctly.

I raise the front and place jackstands behind the front wheels leaving plenty of room to work underneath. I've used the funnel dropped in the engine bay method with a hose - works great and you can stand and I've used a pump via the fill hole.

With the vehicle front raised the tendency would be to overfill. On the other hand, due to bearings in the tail piece, the tendency is to underfill. The result is - just right. Everytime I check 15K later (my maintenance schedule) I have oil dribbling out of the fill hole.
