3rd gear grind after clutch install
Hi all,
My 6-speed Evo9 MR recently had an issue (ACT pressure plate appeared to fail causing the release bearing to detach on one side - the result was that I couldn't engage any gears, but the car was not under load when it happened (moving about 20mph doing a U-turn, and I was in 2nd gear), so I sent the car in for repair (at a well established specialist Evo shop). They removed the clutch and installed another brand new ACT HD clutch.
Now, the clutch works fine, but I have a serious 3rd-gear grind! It wasn't there a week before, so I'm a little puzzled at how a serious grind can appear basically over one day (since the car wasn't driven in between). They used Redline MT90 fluid so I thought I'd try some OEM DiaQueen since the 6-speed is so finicky. I got it in there today, but still no change Every other gear is perfect - no grind at all with silent & smooth shifting.
Anyone have any ideas? Could it be a clutch cable adjustment? Or is it just a freak coincidence? I don't think you can break 3rd gear synchros during the transmission job?
Thanks in advance for your help!

try adjusting the clutch and swap the fluid, although the Redline MT90 is what I use on my 6 speed gearbox and the trans seems to love it. look for metal in the fluid whenever you drain it.

Hi all,
Thanks for the responses! Some comments..
1) The clutch is brand new, so it can't be any wear issues. However, clutch adjustment could be part of the issue (the shop claimed they adjusted it twice). I just bought new OEM clutch slave and master cylinders to refresh the clutch system, and I will properly adjust it then.
2) I already changed the transmission oil. It was running MT90 from the shop, but I just changed it to OEM DiaQueen made specifically for the 6-speed MR (had to special order it through Mitsubishi - even they usually use BG SynchroShift, but I wanted the OEM DiaQueen). Didn't make a difference though.
3) I haven't checked the clutch linkage yet, but will do ASAP. Are there any adjustments on there, or is it just a binding issue to worry about?
Thanks again all!
