evo 8 with COP misfiring in cyl 1-4

hello evo m.

i recently took my car out for labor day weekend, put about 570 miles on it. car ran great. woke up monday (9am) after getting home, to go out and the car had a really bad misfire. so i parked it for a week, up until today (sun. 9-7-14) the car still started and ran on cylinders 2-3 only. i was running on 1 coil/plug kit, ive ran this set-up for 7 months now and put about 3-4000 miles on i total.

things ive done to try to rid the misfire consist of ( i did it in this order because i couldnt retrieve my volt meter/ scanner ma-jig);

swapped back the old 2plugs/ coil and re swapping the COP kit back on

checked all the fuses

installed 15amp and 20amp fuses (according to people whos went fr 2 plugs/coil to COP)

today i;

checked the signal voltage for coil pack 1-4. it read 5.99vts KOEO
POWER- was 11.87 KOEO
GROUND(with the lead on the positive side of battery) -11.9

for the plug at cyl 2-3, signal voltage was .05 KOEO
power- 11.89 KOEO
ground- -11.99 KOEO

so i turned my volt meter to the graph and i was getting sinal with the car running, i had power and ground. the problem is. the signal voltage for cyl 1-4, is reading at 7.2 volts, with the car running. the signal voltage reading for cyl 2-3 is only at 2.25 volts withthe car running (both these check were done at IDLE)

ive also tried trading of the coil packs moving from 2-3 to 1-4 still nothing. i tried the spark PLUGS still nothing. plugs are wet from cyl 1-4 everytime i pulled them. positive i have fuel

i was told it was my pcm, that the power transister(s) mightve blown. so im on the hunt for another evo 8 computer to confirm this. or any other ideas please let me know what else i can do to diagnose this problems. thanks all. anything is appreciated.

sounds like the ecu needs a new transistor. You need something faster than a voltmeter to check that but you can eliminate other componets. First switch the coils with 2-3. if the problem persists on 1-4 check the wiring
ground
IGN 12v+
ECU Signal Test the wire for short to any other circuit and continuity to the proper term on the ecu connector
make any necessary repairs
if all is ok suspect ECU

is it possible to replace the transister only or will i need a new ecu?

ive moved the COP coils around also the 2plug/ coil packs. the problems still stays on cyl 1-4

step 1: switch coil packs between cylinders 1-4 and 2-3 and see if it's still 1-4 misfiring

if it is, you just have a bad coil pack (or two) and need to replace them

if you swapped the coils and the problem stayed, and the wiring is good. You need a new ecu

you need to check the wiring first to make sure it's good

you said you swapped back to the OE coils, those still did the same thing?

yes i swapped back the oem coils and still the same i also swapped them around. i also turned my scanner ma-jig to check for a break in the wires, with and without the ecu connected.

if the issue is present with COP, stock coils, and follows the cylinders and not the ignition coils if you swap them around it's likely an ECU or wiring issue

Start with wiring because it's easy to diagnose continuity and if there's a broken or frayed wire somewhere in the harness

I will try that. I have determined those 2 cylinders by checking Temps while idling at the tubular exhaust header pipes. Temps from 1 thru 4 are 220 510. 515 218 with infrared thermometer. Plugs look different as well.

are you suggesting testing continuity from where to where?

I have just purchased a new Spoolinup COP system as well, as I can tell at least one of the coils has been replaced already. The car is new to me, though I have owned my last Evo for 12 years that I put 188000 miles on it.

thanks for the e esponse.

again, test continuity from where to where?

Ithe also had 1100cc FIC injectors on it running e85. I have it tuned for 93 octane now and I havery sent them out to be checked and cleaned back to FIC.
