10.5 Hotside crack, need opinions
Hello EvoM. I need an opinion on this 10.5 hotside. This is an EVO 8.5 Turbo, when I separated the two piece, it looks like there's an internal crack. Please let me know if it's still useable, or just toss it. The area where the crack is circled red and in the middle of the circle. Thanks in advance.

I would say very usable. the majority of housings in service now have that crack. what I havent yet seen is something worse than the hairline crack. material on these housings burns away VERY slowly. the next step of propagation would be the edges of the hairline crack being burned away. which I am not yet seeing happen. I have never seen the crack turn into chipped piece that may or may not hurt the turbine wheel on its way out.
FP and likely any other major shop wont ugrade a turbo with a housing with a crack. just wouldnt be professional if they did. in light of that most people will be afraid of running a housing like this cause they "think" its no good. its likely good for another 100k and beyond.

Thanks for the comment. I was wondering if it's ok to remove that area with the crack, so that it doesn't get bigger. I'm thinking of just grinding it down and remove that area.

I'm scared to pull my oem hotside off of my HTA71 setup, I'm almost sure I have the crack. Maybe I don't though. I've seen people run them with the crack for many miles without issues, and if it is a 8 turbo who cares if you really mess the turbo up, they're super cheap to replace now for the 8 because everyone wants the 9 turbo

Hey guys,
Can you take a look at this 10.5 housing also? I know this is a common failure but I pulled it off the bearing housing to have it sent to be ported and coated. Do you think it's still usable and worth my time and money to have it ported and coated? If it is usable, how much life does it have left? Car is used mostly as a daily and autox, no track.

Dang it. I was afraid of that. I didn't see the strikes to the turbine housing from the turbine wheel until after I took those photos.
The turbine wheel look ok but I'm not an expert. I'll post a picture up. Spins freely with no slop though.
Thanks for the feedback, even though it's not what I wanted to hear.
