4.3 Final drive

Has anyone tried the 4.31 final drive by Mfactory? The shop that will be rebuilding my transmission suggested it. I didn't want to do a 4.11 since I feel the gearing is too tall for drag racing and will make it difficult to launch. If my calculations are correct it looks as though the car will do just shy of 150mph in 4th gear at 8500rpm which should get me the 9 sec pass I've been looking for. Thoughts?

Don't know about the gear set---looks like a good compromise for those with your mind set. At least you know what your looking for and I assume that's not shifting into fifth in the quarter mile. The 4.11 really aren't all that tall-- back in the day with a 1.1 ratio for 4th gear the 4.11 was the only way to go. Look at it this way, the reduction is barely 10%, is that really going to make a difference in your launch coming out of the hole at 6k+ with better then 300hp and 300 fpt? I think not, then that's just me. The reduction is 10% in rpm as well in each gear--. Almost makes me think that a 4.30 wouldn't be worth the bother--unless its for drag racing only and it accomplished exactly what you want at the right moment--ie crossing the lights at 8500k. My .02. I have considered the 4.11for DD for the mileage, and driven many a 2L (although, not evo) with 4.11 and frankly they are quick. Ahhh, I digress.

Thanks for the response. I have never actually driven an evo equipped with a 4.11 FD. I do hear complaints all the time about launching the 4.11 with an evo 9 1st gear and 26" tall tire. The 4.3 FD is not much different than stock but I think the subtle difference should still be noticeable and should be perfect for what I am looking for.

There is nothing wrong with M-Factory's quality from what I have seen in the Honda stuff. That being said, this is a new FD to me so it would be interesting to see it in action. The 4.30 FD in most dogbox sets works well.

If using a 4.11 don't use EVO9 1st gear. Use the shorter 8 gear and you are good to go!

So are you saying you would prefer the 4.11?

I would say the 4.11 is good for stroker and 2.4 liter engines. I have a 4.11 for my car. It isn't installed yet but 4 locals have it 3 due to my recommendation and they all love it. All there are 800hp cars.

I am making close to 800 but on a 2.0L which is why I figured the 4.3 would be good for my application.

Does anybody had problem using mfactory final drives? I noticed that helix angle is backwards than factory final drive. Thanks

Is the helix angle completely flipped ? That kinda worries me because the diff drive/ring gear in the transmission is supposed to act like an oil pump to help push trans oil through the side of the trans and through the input, and output shafts. I would think that reversal of that would reduce oil flow.

I've been running the 4.09 (around there) for over a year with no problems performance wise. It is reverse cut, but also the type of cut causes a gear whine on deceleration that is annoying. You can search this and it is very common because of the gear cut, which is in between OEM cut and a straight cut gear. I since received a factory Mitsubishi 4.11 gear from Japan, but have yet to install.

I'll weigh in . I had an oem 4.11 in one trans, then sent a new trans to TRE for Rem polishing and everything. That one got a 4.31 M factory FD.

I did not have noise on decel with the 4.31. Not sure how .

I went back to the 4.11 trans because it calmed the wheelspin/hop down compared to the 4.31. I'm able to put down 30psi/600whp or so in first with very little wheelspin. I prefer the longer gearing with the 4.11.

Either ratio, I would recommend the shorter evo 8 first gear over the 9 first gear.

Some report noise on decel and some do not. Interestingly, the gear did not initially have any noise and was OEM quiet, but one day when the trans was cold I was forced to gun the car in 1st gear to avoid getting hit and right afterwards it started to whine on decel.
