downgrading turbo/price question

Hey guys,

I got an evo 8 from auction a while back.
I went to have the tuner check it out since it's kinda sluggish and I don't really feel the bost when driving.

Previous owner installed a FP turbo, but got rid of the tags so I am not able to recognize the exact model. (I guess the reason for this is smog visual inspection).

Tuner recommended I go back to a stock turbo + retune

Now my question is:
He says he can take my turbo, which he values at $500, and install a stock one at no expense ($250 to install, $250 for the stock turbo).
Afterwards, it would be $350 for a tune.

What do you guys think? would you go for it?
don't really wanna mod the car, just want to be able to have some fun w the evo

Other specs on car
stock cat
tanabe exhaust
walbro fuel pump
stock injectors
stock cams
stock air intake, swapped air box for open air filter

thanks!

Got any pics of the turbo on the car? Slide the intake off and take a pic of comp wheel? Someone will be able to identify it (even without tags)

I would swap out that stock cat and retune with the FP turbo

I'm not driving the car at the moment until I get ahold of a rear driver door and take it to the body shop. Right now it's parked at my dad's about 15 miles from me so I'm not able to take some pics at the moment.

The major reason the tuner gave for his sugestion was because I have stock cams and I would have to scale the rest of the mods in order to get some benefit from the FP.
In reality, I'm just looking for the less intrusive way to feel that boost when I get to driving the car again.

Thanks for your input.

FP's go for way more than $500, especially if it turns out to be a BB one. I say keep it, buy some cams and get a new tuner imo.

Hahaha yea tuner wants a new turbo for sure. And wats to rape you on installation. 250 for a turbo install is robbery.

I agree time to find a new tuner

250 is cheap. One popular evo shop asked me 600 cause it's time consuming . I'm in the wrong business for sure lol

I'd also say watch your back on this one I would not take that deal. Figure out what turbo you have and check some prices, and look for used stock turbos they are easy to find and install.

Do not give the turbo away to that shop for $500. Get the turbo measured up and see if its a green red or black. As long as the car has a full exhaust, intercooler and piping, an intake, and upgraded injectors, the turbo will be fine and make good power. Cams would help, but they're not needed..

Thanks guys, I'll go ask around at different shops.

Any of you guys know the price range for turbo installation?

Also I'm in San Diego area if you anyone can recommend a good shop.
It'll still be a while until I get to the turbo though, first I need to get my hands on a rear driver side door + body shop.

Time consuming on an EVO X, but not on your car.

If you know what your doing, you can remove the turbo in about an hr. Drain the rad, remove the hoses, remove the mount brackets, remove the rad, intake, dp, O2 sensor, water/oil lines, exhaust manifold nuts, done.

Fp turbos are not cheap 2500 I'd keep it.even if there is something wrong with it you can have it rebuilt.Id just look for a stock 9 turbo in the for sale section and keep the fp for later if you just want a stock car.my .02 cents

You do not need to remove the radiator. Just put a piece of cardboard in front of the radiator to avoid accidentally damaging the fins. I always removed the turbo with the radiator in place.

To the thread starter, as mentioned by all the responses above, the tuner is trying to benefit off you big time. You shouldnt even let him tune your car either because of this. You dont know what else he is being dishonest about.

True, I personally like having the extra room. To each his own.
