Original miles matter on a built engine?

Hey Gents,

I'm new to the world of engine building and have a question or two. I'm familiar with bolt ons and tunes but when it comes time to start doing some serious work I'm clueless. I'm in the market for an Evo 8 or 9 and plan on turning it into a track monster. If I plan on building the engine (2.2 stroker, new turbo, etc) will the original miles matter? Only reason I'm asking is because I could get an unmolested IX with 35,000 miles for around $30k or $15k for one with around 140,000+. I would love some feedback and some "schooling" so to speak. Let me know guys! Have a good one

It depends on the overall condition of the 140k mile car. Is it a busted hacked together pos, or is it a nice example of a high mileage Evo? Mileage isn't the main concern since with your build goals, you'll be building the trans, tcase, and rear diff anyways.

I agree with this. Mileage should be the last thing to think about if you are going to turn it into a track beast anyway. People are usually concerned about mileage in engines because of the relationship between time, bearing life, compression, leakdown. However, all it takes is a bit of oil starvation to make the internals of a 10,000 mile engine look like a 100,000 mile engine.

I say save the money and buy the built motor evo.

if you are fully building it... all the wear items will be replaced....
and as long as you clean up the bores, all is good.
