Short but loud rattling on cold start
Working on trying to get a video of it, but I'll describe it as best I can until then.
So on maybe 1/5 cold starts, the car will make a loud rattling noise similar to when you install new lifters that are run dry. The noise lasts maybe 2-3 seconds at best.
The car runs normally otherwise, boosts normally etc. Doesn't really sound like an exhaust leak, besides it goes away quickly. The engine barely even gets warm to the touch by that time.
I've bled the lifters, checked the timing belt tension and tensioner operation. I even reset the tension according to the fsm. Most threads on here about a Cold start point to the tensioner. I think I can rule that out though.
My question is, has anyone else had a similar noise and/or is it just normal?

If a built engine then maybe piston noise - pretty normal. Otherwise, if not lifters then possibly an engine problem.
My wife drives a WRX and in the cold when you start that thing it knocks. Eric O say about Subaru's, "If its not knocking, its not running." But it goes away quickly as the car warms, usually by the time we reach the end of the driveway. But if my Evo did that I would be alarmed.
