Stock synchros vs synchrotech
Hey guys,
I wanna get my 5 speed transmission for my Evo8 rebuild since the 4th gear seems to be grinding and locking me out at high rpm ( over 6k ).
I spoke to my mechanic and told me most likely the synchro is damaged.
So question for any of you guys here that replaced your synchros, did u went with the oem or did anyone try the synchrotech synchros? Please any feedback would be appreciated. I did some research on cost and the synchrotech are not that expensive didn't get the cost for the oem but i heard price is similar .

Wow I never knew that. I was curious to get Jon's .02 on those after he tested them. Crazy indeed. Sooner or later Ill be sending him my trans. Hate pulling the thing out but I'll be excited when the time comes.

WOW! That is some crazy gear wear. We have sold and installed thousands of carbon synchros and I have never seen anything like this before. Even when abused or run with incorrect lubrication the Synchros will normally burn the carbon but not damage the gear cone. Did the rest of the gears also show this type of wear? Was it an OEM gear or aftermarket? My guess would be that this was an issue with the gear hardening rather than from the synchro. In either case I would be very interested in more information about the gear failure in the picture posted.

I've got a call with him sometime in the next few days to ask this exact question, I'll let you know what he says. Regarding hard to get off the phone, I'd rather have that than someone who just wants to get off the phone! Means he's passionate about what he does

I completely understand those who only want Genuine OEM parts as I have many customers like this as well, but I do feel we have designed and developed a very high quality part that will benefit those who are looking for something more performance based. I look forward to getting more details from TRE about this gear after you talk to him. My guess is that it is a reverse gear from an EVO X with an OEM carbon synchro. The grooves are all in line as is the OEM synchro while ours is designed with offset friction pads in a 4,3 pattern to evenly distribute the force across the gear cone.
