The noise goes away when the serpentine belt is off. It also seems to change tone/pitch with the engine's rpm. Any idea what this might be? PS and AC both still work fine.

Thank you for any insight.

Use a garden hose to pin point the exact area of noise.

Could be any of the pulleys on belt.

Garden hose, screwdriver, stethoscope, whatever you use, be careful. I remember when one of the best mechanics I ever knew ran his hand through a belt. Hold the listening device lightly with the tips of your fingers. That way, if the belt snatches up the tool, your hand doesn't go with it.

Might be the AC. It's at the lowest point when mine went it locked up and made horrid sounds. I have it deleted for now. Easy way to diagnose is about a 10 dollar belt for the NON AC cars. You can leave the AC in place the belt just wont go around it. If the noise goes away you have you culprit

noise definitely sounds like its coming from either ps pump or ac compressor. when your compressor went out did it make the noise all the time or only when the ac is on?

If the bearing in the AC compressor pulley is bad it will only make noise when the AC compressor is not engaged.

My compressor bearings completely locked up AC off Defrost off still locked and wouldn't let car start. Bypassed the AC compressor with non AC belt and fired right up.

The pulley on the compressor wobbles all over the damn place but is completely seized and won't spin. I'll put a new compressor in it over the winter. I'll have the system completely drained, cleaned, and refilled with fresh refrigerant using the proper equipment at my buddy's garage.
