Trans feels like crap.

Hey everyone, bought a evo ix with se last year and fixing some of the things the previous owners didn't maintain or even try to do correctly.

Zip ties on exhaust hangers
Sketchy battery relocate
Etc etc

Anyway I have read a few different threads and have had similer issues with their transmission but I figured I would ask.

My trans feels real notchy (about to change fluid here soon), hard to shift and 5th grinds unless I ease my way into it. The 5th gear is what I am worried about. Guy said it has a works sts and heard that may be the problem. Before I take it to a shop what should I expect before hand? Plan on doing new shifter bushings, cables, new oem fluid through out the drive train.

What clutch is in it?

Could be clutch dragging or bad synchro

Do the fluid change & test afterwards. Possible 5th gear syncro (one of the most common to fail)

Consider TRE for a trans rebuild if necessary

This ^^

I would recommend using the OEM Mitsubishi trans fluid, and mix in a GM Syncromesh type trans fluid additive as well.

My evo shifted very similar when I first got it, it too had a twin disk. Mine was warped some and wasn't dissengaging all the way, even when I adjusted the clutch pedal. It would grind going into 5th, and got so bad it wouldn't want to go into first at a stop. I ditched the clutch and changed the trans fluid a few times with the redline cocktail and it shifts so much better. The syncros did get worn out a ton with the dragging twin disk, but it at least shifts smooth now (if you shift slow).

No just no no no. OEM fluid is fine, but GM synchromesh does not belong in our transmissions.

I think X Double Dot tells the most likely story. And also I'm not a fan of synchromesh.

Jacks did a great write up on Trans
fluids.
https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/jacks-transmissions/641688-oil-recommendations.html

I would go with what they recommend
