Discoloration indicates heating which if it occurred in engine indicates a thrust bearing problem.

Place a dial indicator on the nose of the crankshaft. Measure the amount of end play. The standard tolerance is 0.05 to 0.25 mm with a limit of 0.40 mm.

Even if this occurred before the bearings were replaced the thrust surface of the crank may be damaged requiring replacement of the crankshaft. So, I'd also suggest inspecting the crank before it goes into the second car.

A smoked thrust bearing and thrust surface on the crank won't make noise.
