Just want to say I have looked all over the forums and I couldn't find any help for my issue. So I had a shop recently install a brand new rebuilt evo 9 6 speed and a exedy stage 1 clutch. The car shifted fine at first then, I started starting in 3rd gear because the car feels as if it doesn't have a 1st gear. The weird part about it is, if I put the car into 2nd or 3rd then immediately put it into 1st it'll go in. But I have to do that every time I come to a stop. What could be wrong. The shop wont back up their **** job, and they promised me it wasn't the wavy clip and they bleed everything "correctly"? Could it be a clutch adjustment, linkages, bleeding? I'm at a lost and I want to drive her again.... Thanks for any help you can give me since I know you are not with the car and its hard to diagnose.

it could be the cables, but you really need to try disconnecting the cables and shifting the gearbox manually right on the box if you get what I mean.. and see if the gears go in as it might be an internal gearbox problem with the mechanism that keeps you fvrom engaging two gears at the same time...

I would check clutch adjustment first and do the clutch drag test. If its hard to put in gear one of the reasons could be the clutch isn't releasing.

By putting it in a higher gear first, its allowing the transmission to slow down and accept it.

It could also be the cables are getting old and dry at the connections.
Spray some lubricant on the shifter cable connections under the hood (they are underneath the battery) and see if that makes a difference in shifting.

I've had issues getting into reverse because of the clutch with the 6 speed. Definitely check out the things these guys have already said

I remember Jon at TRE telling me after I had my 6 speed rebuilt to be aware of the fact that the shift bracket on the trans can be shifted side to side, and can cause issue with engaging 1st and 2nd, or reverse, depending on which side it's shifted to. It doesn't necessarily sound like your issue, but if you're going to lube the end of the shifter cables and actuate gear changes by hand, you may want to loosen the bracket bolts and move it around to see if engaging 1st becomes easier.
