Best clutch for the money?
right now my clutch is slipping. i need a new clutch. i have my eye on a cusco twin disc. My wallet is somewhere else. is there anything thats cheaper and just as good as it?
ACT has good prices, but im not really fond of on/off engagement.
i want it to last a long time and handle at least 350lb of torque.

I like the Exedy Clutch. They make some good quality stuff. It is just a little cheaper than the Cusco for the twin disc. http://www.rallysportdirect.com/shop...22_253_259_276

You can try RRE's no name clutch. Lotsa good info here.

Best of all, it looks like a stock clutch. So the dealers won't hassle you about it if you bring your EVO in for some warranty stuff.

I need a good cutch, not something that "should be mounted on the wall as a peice of art" according to the guys at Exedy. What's with the fancy shmancy anodized purple? You can't even see the damn thing when installed. Give me a good, strong clutch for 500 over a high priced fad for 1300 anyday.

[edit] I guess I should really point out why I hate it.
Hard launches: You can hear your drive train plead for mercy as even slightly slipping the clutch is rare.
Cold startup: Chatters like my wife.
Gear shifts: Sometimes it just won't go into gear. Redline it and try to shift quickly and it's like you hit a wall. The gears don't grind, the lever just won't go in. Also happens when I try to downshift to 3rd sometimes; just won't go in.
Pedal pressure: Firmer than stock, which I don't like.
1 - 2 shift: Doesn't grind, just makes a horrible 'clunk.'
I could live with most of those problems, but the fact that I can't put it into gear sometimes just really annoys me. I never missed a shift with the stock clutch (let's face it, it's pretty hard to mis-shift these trannies) but have missed many with the ACT.

Info on ACT
Below is useful infromation I got from ACT. The purpose of this is provide infromation about a clutch under $600. Yes there are better clutches out there but I am not looking to pay over $1000 for a twin disc clutch considering I don't drag my car ever week or do 5000RPM launches every day.
Email I revieved from ACT.
I have 300WHP evo and only plan to go get around 320WHP with cams.
Is the ACT street clutch ideal for my power needs?
I think so. It is a good upgrade without sacrificing too much in way of money or drivability. Our clutch will handle up close to 500 ftlbs of torque so it will be plenty for your needs.
Also would you suggest using the stock flywheel?
That depends on you, but the stock flywheel is only 14 lbs and it is forged or ductile iron so I don’t have any reservations about recommending it for performance use, since it is safe to do so. A lighter wheel will get quicker revs, but I don’t think it is needed IMO.
I only launch at the track which may be five times a month or 60 times a year. Will this clutch feel smoother then OEM and not wear as quickly like the stock clutch does. My car was purchased used and clucth has some wear after 13K. I want a smooth clutch feel like butter. I plan to get a clucth very soon and I want it to last longer than OEM.
I think anything will last longer than the stock one. Personally I would remove the restrictor in the hydraulics if you haven’t done so since it will only roast clutches at the track.
Can this clucth be slipped at 5K or will it burn?
That is hard to answer. A launch at 5K, throttle mashed, at full boost is different that 5K at half throttle. It will not be nearly as fragile as stock, but as far as how much, it really it’s a matter of heat.
How would you launch with this clutch at 5K? Slip or Drop
I am not sure since I don’t own an EVO and not only do you have to know what type of launch the clutch is happy with, but also what the chassis, tires, transmission and engine is happy with. Usually the methods are not the same. The less slip the better when it comes to clutches since you produce less heat, but it can be hell on transmissions. Too low of rpm may cause the engine to bog or the tires to hit too hard. Too much slip may give poor reaction times and roast the clutch.
How does clutch feel compared to stock?
A little more firm, a little “snappier”, but still smooth. When I say “snappier” I mean that the clutch engages in less pedal travel. The clutch may require a slight adjustment to raise the initial engagement point, but the pedal travel from where it starts to engage to where it is fully engaged is reduced from stock.
Our clutch is similar to stock in design but:
38% more clamp load = 38% increase in clamp load
Better linings = more heat capacity, more durability. Steel backed to prevent burst failure
Less marcel (cushioning between the disc linings) = Quicker engagement. Also helps to put in a better adjustment range
Proprietary modification = Reduces the grind common to stock EVO clutches

UFO, what is it exactly that you don't like about the ACT (and are you using an OE, or upgraded disc)? Please, use detail... It would be hard to beat the ACT (with the upgraded disc) or No Name Clutch (RRE) for average Joe's pocket book... Are you having an issue driving it?
