Octane Boosters
I have done a fair amount of reading about boosting octane due to the low quality of gas around here -- 91 only. I have read that the Evo was designed to run on 93.
I thought it would be interesting to find out how many people are using octane boosters.
I am particularly interested if anyone is using Xylene or Toulene as they appear to be the best.
What am I talking about?

This is what I understand from what I have read.
1) Avoid anything that has MMT in it. It coats things like the O2 sensor and plugs with a thin red metallic coating. It can also do damage to your CAT over time.
2) Most off the shelf items do not boost octane very much and can leave deposits.
3) Never run leaded gas. This can also coat the O2 sensor and will trash your CAT if you have one on.
4) If you read the link I put in above you will notice that Toulene/Xylene are already in our gas and have actually been recommended by BP Europe as an octane booster.
Answer the poll guys! It is interesting information even if you have never added an octane booster.

Propaine injection is about the best octane booster you can use. It's initaly expensive and not as simple to use as the crap you just pour into your gas tank, but it works much better and costs less in the long run, mostly because it only gets used when you need it.

It is interesting how few people have tried this.
Here is a link to more information on the EvoM board.

I use xylene, and toluene when I cant get xylene. Xylene has octane of 117. One gallon per tank when you fill up will get you above 93 octane, starting with 91. Toluene is 113 octane.
My car runs stronger and smoother with it. another way of raising the "effective" octane level is with water injection....

according to the Evo manual, the car should be running on 98 octane rating gas and could run on few other stuff those Funny cars run on...
we get 93 in Georgia and I think some parts of south georgia, at conoco station, carries those race octane 103 gases... I can't imagine how much they are now tho.
I've been meaning to try one of those NOS brand octane booster but I don't know... Anyone tried them yet on 93 octane gas? Any difference?

last time to the dyno i put 94 octane and a bottle of octane booster, the car saw not a drop of knock even at 26 psi. everyone thought i had race gas in the car.
since that day i put octane booster in that car every tank.
i did notice that without the booster my knock link lights up, but i don't feel any diff in power.

Want to try xylene, but haven't gotten around to it yet.
I don't worry so much for daily driving, as we can get 93 here in NY.
When I go to Englishtown for some "fun", I buy gas there.
They have 100 unleaded at the pump - $4.50 a gal last time I got some.
