Sigh. After a long and hard look, and many many hours of consideration, i probably won't go with the 3071 turbo anymore.

I spoke with Vishnu the other day, and from what i understand, Shiv wasn't too happy ith the 3071 b/c it lags about as much as the 3037 but makes nowhere near the power.

Maybe ill try Buschurs stock turbo upgrade and have Shiv tune it.

Don't know about real life but in theory the 3071 is spot on. It has the exact same turbine as the 3037 with a slightly smaller compressor, 71mm compared to the 76mm on the 3037. This should give less lag but also a bit less power, the laws of physics once again I have a hard time seeing why ATP uses the 3071 in their kits that are supposed to give a quick spool and good driveability if it really doesn’t? As they say they have put months of dyno testing to achieve the perfect "compromise" so to speak. The 3071 is rated to 450hp and the 3037 to 500 so it will of course give less power but you should gain on better spool instead. I have yet to see a 3071 kit installed on a car with more supporting mods to see what it’s really capable of. My car probably won’t be ready and tuned in another three weeks or so, still some waiting until I can test and see for my self.

AMS also use the 3071 but their figures seam high, they state 575hp on that, don’t know how but they also state 650hp for the 3076 which to me is the 3037. On their page they state spool to be 3000-3600 rpm on the 3076 and 3200-3800 on the 3071 but I guess they must have mixed those up cause if that’s correct there should be no reason to go for the 3071.

Yes Thomas, I just noticed the spool up numbers yesterday, they where mixed up when they where put up on the website. The numbers on the website are crank hp and figure about 15-17% loss. The numbers also represent the maximum the turbo will support.

Hey Az3ar are you using both springs with the tial wastegate? I talked to paul and he said to use them both for a 21psi wastegate.

Who told you that? Looks like I'm going to have to withhold next Friday's Hooters company dinner from someone

PS. BTW, I like the 3071. It's certainly the least laggy of the upgraded turbo options on the market for the EVO. I think the confusion comes from the fact that my personal preference is the 3037. It's my opinion that if you are going to do a turbo upgrade, do one that *just* meets your boost response requirments and has the highest flow potential. From what I've seen, the 3037 fits this bill for most customers (and myself). Not all, but most that i have seen. Yes, it does spool up ~300rpm later than the 3037. However, it's transient boost response at engine speeds well above the boost theshold (say 5000rpm) is extraordinary and on par with the factory turbo and far ahead of any of the old-school non GT turbos from the T-series family. It's basically a big turbo that behaves, in my ways, like a small turbo. That's what makes it so unique, IMHO.

Can you PM me that link too. I found a thread on here that tells you how but i just want to make sure that it matches what you did since it is proven to work.

Thanx

Haha. Sorry, shiv, i won't get him in trouble then. And sorry to everyone else including Az3ar for the post then. Apparently i was misinformed.

Shiv, are either one of these turbos (the 3071 and the 3037) adequate if I only plan on running 91 octane all the time? Or would the compromise in lag be much more than the benefit of the extra power ?
