What is the use of a high flow cat?

I am in the process of selecting components to upgrade my Evo. It is not easy as there are many goodies for this machine. Anyway, I am trying to piece together a good 3" exhaust that will be emissions legal. I am trying to find a good cat to complete it. My question is what is the use of a high flow cat? I keep hearing things that it may not pass emissions etc. Everyone seems to be using the Ultimate Racing one. I also inquired about Vishnu's. I figured he is out in California. With their stricter emissions, his catalytic converter has to be good. But then someone said even his may not pass. I am looking for a cat that will go through the inspection station with no problems. If a high flowcat won't pass what's the use? I might as well stick with the stock one. I had a Buschur one with my 91 Eclipse that was okay, but that was a 2.5 inch. Not to mention his 3" is a slip fit, so it will only fit his exhaust and is not compatible with other 3" exhausts.

Wow! 45 views and no reply. I guess we are all having a reality check and are unsure of their cat's emission control capability. So much for self-confidence.

i wanted to know too. i'm not interested in running a test pipe because i live in ma and there is no way i'll pass with that.

we don't have emissions test's here in my county in FL, but I want at high-flow cat as well. i am more concerned with warranty issues though. If i just go with a cat-delete then mitsu is sure to have my ***

I View a High Flow cat in the same same way I see High Performance Drum Breaks.....

I'm holding onto my stock exhaust, so I can just put it back on if I have to... I think most people don't know yet because most people have had their Evo for less than 1 year, so haven't had to go in yet for testing... VA is every 2 years... Where do you live?

Look for random tech. They are the leader with HI-flow cats. They should have enough information for you.

With the Evo being a LEV ( low emission vehicle ) it will be hard for it to pass even with a high flow cat.

I believe it has to filter out at least 80 % of smog compared to 70 % on previos gen turbo mitsus.

just save the old cat just in case.

mitdu dealers are normally ol about having an exhaust, but I wonder if theyll trip about the test pipe?

Well in Cali., it is illegal to change you cat. since with have OBDII. If you don't believe me, check out any ad from Random Technology.

The benefit of a high-flow cat is to not smell like hell and pollute like hell all the time...while still only dropping a few HP from a test pipe (cat delete). As far as California goes, I have no idea if any of 'em will pass.

I have VISHNU's signature DP and CAT back - its awesome. You'll be pleased with the quality and fit of this system - expensive but worth it.

No cats EVER on a turbo car, I'll just bolt on the stocker for that one day test in 1007
