dont bother with it unless you are racing your EVO. you will find that you will need to rebuild the box every 1000miles or so and the rebuilds are exspencive! also the sound, although very intoxicating for a bit, will drive you mad after a while!

id stick with the stock gear set or see if anyone makes a upreted syncro gear kit as these are much more user freindly and will need much less attention.

thanks Chris!

Call Turbotrix, they built race transmissions. And BTW, I don't know if your familiar with a dog box, but you don't want one in a street car.

Can anyone fill me in on what a dog box is?

I keep hearing about them, but all I know is that they are for skilled drivers and that they sound cool...

Call John Shepherd, he is THE MAN. Definitely who I'll be contacting when the time comes, hopefully no time soon. http://www.shepracing.com/ There is already one guy on here, that I know of that runs a built tranny by him in his Evo, said that John had it done in a very timely and cost effective manner.

There special cut gears. If I remember correctly there straight cut rather than hellical (swirl). You don't need to use the clutch with dog gears, you just slam them in. They won't work with normal shifts, you have to slam them in. Magnus makes a set of the dsm, take a look at their site for better description.

That's where I'd put my money...

Thing is, after speaking to John Shepard and Jon @ TRE, the evo tranny is plenty strong as it is. Plus it's relatively new so theres not many parts for it like the other dsm trannies they're used to. Personally mine is going to Jon @ TRE, he was great as well as informative to speak with.

Dog gear boxes are basically straight cut gears with a dog engagement. The dogs allow much faster changers than synchro. This enables none clutch changes, which although sound very nice, are still hard to do as you need to learn how to change the box without damaging it! And then there is the noise. Watch a WRC rally event and listen to the in car coverage! You can here the gear whine through the intercom system! Yes that’s in the drivers/co drivers’ helmets! Rebuilds are also much more frequent as the nature of the dog engagement leads to excessive wear on them.

As said before, IMHO don’t bother. If you are worried about the strength then get the stock synchro box rebuilt. But I have seen many cars producing very high power out puts with no problems. Norris Designs is running 800bhp on standard box (with an extended 4th and 5th) and I think RC Developments EVO 6 is on a stock (ish) box to. Both of these tuners do plan on running a dog box though but they are mad so there you go!

Thanks Chris.
