Wideband O2 Sensor

I was just curious too know the reason behind needing a controller for a wideband? Why can't you just buy a wideband (Bosch unit LSU4.2 or similar) and install it into the exhaust system. Then run a 12v power and ground too it, run the output to a meter or or other metering device to read the info and, if needed, use the stock heater wire to heat the wideband sensor?

different voltages...narrow band gauges use 0-1v and wideband use 0-5 volt. narrow band is only set to read 14.7 which is too lean on an evo.

I've thought of the same thing specially since I've heard rumors that Evos come with a wideband from factory (5 wire o2 sensors up front) but I haven't even looked at mine or attempted to start on something in regards to it. I had a little discussion with some one at plxdevices.com and they are under the same impression that the Evos come with a wideband sensor from factory.

But like I said this remains to be proven . If it was true though, all we would need would be a control unit and we would have a wideband!

Anyone have any input on this theory??
