I found the Castrol TWS 10w-60 at Super Autobac's in Orange County. Has anybody tried this oil in the states? How did the engine run? has anybody had a used oil Analysis running this grade? I think the europeans like this oil and it can be had here in the states for $8.95 a quart. In England i think they pay 100 british pounds for 1 gal.

I use this oil in my 7. I have no proof that it should be much better or worse than any other performance oil but it has lots of engine approvals written on the bottle like BMW M5, Porsche etc etc. I know it’s also used by several competition teams around here both for rallying and circuit racing.

I am going be researching the theory about thin oil is preferred for new engines with tight tolerances, I am sure that bmw/ porsche build engines to tight specs. unless they built them loose to free up horsepower thus using the thick oil?

How strict is bmw concerning emmissions and will this Castrol RS/TWS shorten cat life.

I had a bmw m3 2002, this oil was recomended because the engines would spin berrings and blow up. IMO you don't need oil this thick in our engines, it will cost you horsepower because it is so thick, don't waste your money.

Thanks, I heard that the M3 problem was traced to the oil pumps. I picked up a few cases of 76 Pure Synthetic 5W-40 it is ACEA A3/ BMW Long Life and a true PAO base stocks. I will have UOA done and post results. I had the Mobil 1 10W-30 UOA performed by Blackstone Labs and it thined to a 20W in just 1125 miles.

i had 20w60 in my euro swapped m3...(1996) and it ran fine...even in the NJ winter during cold starts...go figure.

m3 problem was traced to oil pumps and also incorrect berring clearences, go figure, not the only problem with them (m3) if I had to make a list, it would be very long indeed!

I have used it and it's a bit think for the EVO on the street. Perfect for track days.

seems like an extremely bad idea to me. unless you have a serious cooling issue or an aircooled motor, you should never see temps that would need 60 weight. you're going to give up a lot of power to windage on the crank and it won't drain properly through the galleries.

my m3 seemed quite happy with 0w40 Mobil1. the thermal limits of Mobil1 10w30 are pretty damn high IMO... for a track day in an Evo I'd use 10w40 at the most.

Doug and I from Boost Solutions both tried 5W-50 out and our engines started pinging. We swapped it out with 10W-30 and all was well. Take it for what it's worth.

did your oil temps go up? Was this a stock car? can you hear the car pingingand will this happen with a 5w-40 or 10w-40. Thanks.

Real pinging or sensed knock? Did you have det cans? The reason I ask is some of the thicker oils can increase lifter noise which is read by the stock knock sensor as detonation.


TWS is the same as Formula RS.

The lifter noise got louder and there was also some added noises at low rpms. We didn't log the noise, just changed the fluid immediately. There wasn't any detonation just noises. The oil temps were fine, the car ran fine. I took it to the track and it ran fine. After a few days it started making noises that I hadn't heard before. All that I can tell you is that after I changed back to 10w-30 all was well. Sorry if not clear enough. If you want a detailed description PM Badazzcar and he will better explain.
