Exclamation poll: engine management

I need management taken care of before i purchase any more boltons for my car. I want to spend the money now, and worry about the tuning aspect as the mods increase, piece by piece.

I dont care about dyno # talk. I seriously need INFORMED opinions on my tuning needs. In the next year, i plan on:

Cams,valvesprings, retainers, camgears
fuel pump and larger injectors
new FMIC with hard piping

I currently have a 3" turbo-back catless setup, and an HKS EVC V.

I am considering AEM EMS as the best solution. Though its expense is there, i think it will benefit me in the long run. I have no desire to get to a certain point with my car and have to purchase a second tuning setup. I do not waste money, and hate doing things twice.

Serge, probably because the topic is just about beaten to death. Searching can yield a serious amount of info.

My two cents: If you're not going to the turbo kit, engine build and non-daily driver route, buy a UTEC without the Tuner and let it at that. If you are going the distance, buy the AEM, its that simple. Otherwise, KISS principle, buy an AFC2 for all around use.

the thing is, i have been searching about this topic since the first day i got onto this site... I have beaten search to death!

The thing is, i can't find any answers because there is no answer from anyone- its in my wallet!

RaleighEvoVIII-
i got a real nice response from your buddy en1gma... people like him seal the deal for me, but the closest RESPECTED tuner to me is TurboTrix- about 6 hours away. Im not too sure about having to phone them every time i slap on a few new mods...

I guess i just have trouble being able to commit to something like this while having a very limited supporting tuner within a reasonable proximity. I have no idea. FARK.

Yea i hear you .. 6hrs is a trip luckilly enough we have some good guys local., but let me tell you it should still be worth it you will have to drive to someone for any of these really if you are like me and new to this whole turbo setup. either that or go get trained by AEM yourself, i have seriously thought of that myself

I would think that AEM would produce a video or DVD to send out with the EMS setup to educate the people that are tuning their cars with it. Honestly, i dont have the time to go to the dyno every time i put new stuff on my car.

I feel comfortable learning how to work with the EMS, but i just need something more than a forum that will encourage me to feel confident in tuning.

you could try a pocket datalogger or an old laptop if you have one... it wont be as true as a dyno but i think it will provide you with enough accurate info to get you running good inbetween times you have to get to a dyno. I could be waaaay wrong on this, maybe maybe one of the evom gurus will run across this sometime soon and give thier thoughts

I have an S-AFC right now and im buying a utec within the next month. The S AFC is good if your not looking to make big power. The main down side to me is that you can't controll timing or datalog. I ran an AEM EMS on my last car, its a great system IF you know someone that really knows how to tune that system. Most people say that they can tune it but really have no clue how. I like the UTEC because you can do everything that EMS can do and you can set up more then one map and switch on the fly. Plus its an easy system to tune. Just my $.02, i hope it helped somewhat.

AEM end of story...best mod i ever did. Especially if you are going to do cams...i used to have a reflash and before that i had an AFC...

nothing compares to the drivability and smoothness of the AEM...

it might be more money than one wants to spend, but trust me, if i could go all the way back to the beginning, that would have been the first mod i ever did
