OBD II Scanner question
Well for some reason my damn service engine soon light keeps coming on and I have been unplugging the battery to get rid of it, but still comes on about every 200-300 miles. While the light was off I went and scanned for codes, but nothing showed up, so this time while the light is still on, i'm going to scan and find out what code is showing up. Anyone know if I can turn off the service engine soon light with the code reader or do i have to fix the problem before i can get the light to turn off without unplugging the damn battery.
Reason I hate pulling the battery cable is that it takes about 200 miles for the ECU to start running optimally again. The car is running strong now and I don't want to reset the ECU anymore. My guess is the code will show up as either a p300 or the p400 type of code.

Most good scanners can clear a code, have them pull the code and also the freeze frame data on it. I think Autozone will do it for free. You can get a good obd2/1 scan tool for about $250. I paid $280 for mine at Autozone, it will read all codes, clear codes, store freeze frame data, and also read realtime data (won't data log).

The ecu stores engine rpm, temp, int. temp, timing advance, gear, SPEED, (for those who wonder how your dealer knows how fast you were going when you tossed a cel), and a bunch more data when the car tosses the CEL. You can retrieve it with a good scan tool.

Well I just got back and read my codes and it turns out to be a PO420 (Innefficient cat code) Guess even with a high flow cat we can still get this code. I'm going to call Buschur today and let him know and hopefully get a o2 simulator to fix the issue. By the way advanced auto parts in herndon are great. They let me use the (ACTRON CP9135 obd II card reader free of charge) all the other places around here want to charge 40 bucks to read the damn codes and reset the light!

The 'frame' will contain lots of information about what was happening that might have caused the light to come on: failing sensors, overreving, overheating, etc.

It's a 2 trip detection code meaning it has to see the malfunction twice before it trips the
light. It will store the first malfunction it has seen but not the second, assuming it's the same code.
