HKS cams, valvetrain tick?
i have had my HKS 272's in for a while now, but here recently the valvetrain has been ticking, its not very loud, but sounds kind of like how loud injectors pulsating does. I have plenty of oil in the car, and "thought" i had bled the lifters before i I installed the cams, just started worse here recently. The car barely ticked stock, but its still not that bad, just noticable to me.

Out of all the cams I have installed that strange "ticking" phenomenon has occured once. When we heard it we tore everything back apart for a recheck (thought we had done something wrong) but we couldn't find anything. The strangest part was it went away on its own a week later. I don't like when unexplainable things go away on their own 'cause then you never know what was wrong or if it is going to happen again. I am uncertain still as to wether the noise is bad or if it is something to just ignore. Cams shouln't cause a tick & scince many of you are experiencing it .... actually I' call HKS right now

Just got off the phone w/ HKS they say the "tick" is not normal & is caused by not using the proper install lube. I think I disagree w/them on this. Every set I've done I used comp cam install lube. Cam install lube is cam install lube whether its made by Comp or a little person on Mars. It happened to me, like I said before, once. And yes I used install lube that time also. Talking to some of those guys @ h_s can be frustrating. They said switch to synthetic oil and that will fix it, but doesn't the EVO come W/ Synthetic from the factory? Switch?

Yeah i run plenty of synthetic oil, and install lube is just to protect the internals in the head/such as lobes and stuff when you are installing, so you dont start the engine dry. The install lube disappears anyway. Engine assembly lube is assembly lube.

The tick is somewhat "normal" but not ideal. I have a tick when cold with 264s. Apparently rehoning the cam bearing bores helps resolve the issue.

Just got off the phone w/ a friend of mine whose sole job is building mitsu & subaru engines he says, and this makes more sense: "the lobes on the HKS cams that he has done have all had variences in height" I never found it necesary to measure every lobe. I only check the centerline and I have found variences there. He also said he can get me some cams out of New Zealand that are dead on and not to pricey. Specs for anyone who might be interested, intake 264 10.9mm lift 272 10.9mm lift, Exaust 272 10.9mm lift
