Thinking of getting a Radar detector.

Mounting high gives a distinct advantage. The advantage is when you crest a hill if your detector is mounted higher it will clear the hilltop faster than one mounted lower. Longer line of sight = better protection. Laser performance is also improved since light is more easily reflected from the hood when mounted low, the index of refraction waves from a hot engine probably also play games when mounted low.

I mount mine right in the middle of the windshield. I figure this way I'll avoid as many obstructions as possible. Also, I don't really worry about a cop seeing it, because they are not illegal here. And if I do get pulled over, I'm screwed anyway.
Concerning the false alarms...
The only one that consistently sets off false alarms is the x-band. Everything else seems to be authentic. So I've gotten to where I totally ignore the x-band, unless I'm in the middle of nowhere and it starts going off anyway.

lol ... here in another po-dunk part of Utah I've found some Sherrifs get out the ol' X-Band and hide in the bushes. The only thing that saved me one day was that I KNEW that an automatic door opener wasn't coming from that bush up ahead. Radar Detectors help, but being aware is where you really need to be.

All of the reviews I have read on the laser systems made by rocky mountain have been poor. One test actually claimed they had no more difficulty getting a speed from the equipped car than the unequipped car.
Maybe they have improved things since that test?

As an electrical engineer that KNOWS a bit about radar, Rocky Mountain Radar is junk.
You get what you pay for ... typically those found in the 200+ dollar range are the best value.

I remember a magazine article that tested the "lidar jammers". They had mixed results and determined that it wasn't worth the cost as the jammer only worked less than half the time. I don't have access to the article right now or I'd find it and scan it. As for radar, SCC, Consumer Elect., Motortrend and other have all rated the V1 as the best of the best for a couple years now.

edit-Just noticed the dome light remains hot with the key off, so you wouldn't want to use this for your +. One of the hot leads to the sunroof is a possibility, it seems to have 3 (green orange, green yellow & green black, terms 3, 6 & 5), but really just connecting to the back of the cig lighter socket is much more straightforward electrically, sure to be trouble free.

Escort Passport SR7 kicks ***, works great. Don't pay to have it installed, its not that hard and dealers do a sloppy job IMO. I re-installed mine because the initial install was shoddy.
