who doesnt fall under one of these categories? and follows the regular mantenance schedule (service every 5000 miles or every 5 months)

follow the severe maintenance schedule (service every 3750 miles or every 4 months) only if your vehicle is frequently driven under one or more of the following road conditions

-driving on dusty, rough, muddy, or salt-spread roads
-towing or police, taxi or commercial operation
-extensive idling and/or low speed operation
-repeated short-trip operation at freezing temperatures (engine not thoroughly warmed up)
-extended use of brakes while driving
-driving in sandy areas
-more than 50percent operations in heavy city traffic during hot weather above 90 degrees

it seems like to me that everyone , in some way or other , drives with/in one or more of these conditions fequently

I don’t either and I drive mine just about every day.

-driving on dusty, rough, muddy, or salt-spread roads
I live in Atlanta, and while there is occasionally a little debris on the road after storms I don’t have too much trouble with dust, mud, overly rough roads or salt.

-towing or police, taxi or commercial operation
I’m not a tow truck, cop, taxi or pizza guy.

-extensive idling and/or low speed operation
I work odd hours so I very rarely see rush hour traffic. I don’t drive slow.

-repeated short-trip operation at freezing temperatures (engine not thoroughly warmed up)
I live in Atlanta and have a garage. I’m very good about warming the car up.

-extended use of brakes while driving
I don’t ride the brakes.

-driving in sandy areas
I still live in Atlanta and don’t take it on the beach.

-more than 50 percent operations in heavy city traffic during hot weather above 90 degrees
I very rarely drive into the city or sit in traffic. That goes with working the hours I do, hating city traffic, and running mostly on highways to and from work.

If you live on the beach where they salt the roads, use the car as a taxi and just start up and go, then by all means use the severe schedule. In all seriousness, you know how you drive and what your situation is. If you think you need to follow the severe schedule, then do it. If you want to research it more then there are plenty of threads on oil change intervals, fluid types to use and what you can/should be doing yourself and what you can/should let the dealer do.

so does people that are now driving in the salt ridden roads follow the severe maintenance schedule?

its a personal call really, and i can understand how you can meet "severe" maintenance guidlines. i dont really, but with a car like an evo, i try to keep up on all of it the best i can. i get free maintenance from the factory but oil changes only come every 5k free, so i change them in between.

I guess the only severe maintenance followed by most is the oil change. That's what I do at least, change oil every 3k.

with synthetic and a good air / oil filter 5k is alright for near stock car. If you mod and also have high mileage then 3750 is good. Might as well forget about going to the dealer unless you hurting for money. cost about 30$ for oil change done yourself. 37.50 at Wal Mart, and another 0 to 10$ for tire rotation.
