04/05 Evo Transfer case better than 03s?
I know a lot of people are going through transfer cases...Do the 2004 or 2005 EVOs have better transfer cases than the 2003s? Are they the same part number?

Well I have an 03 EVO....I got my transfer case replaced 3 weeks ago. I was coming home from work and noticed the familiar whine sound. I jumped on it a little then backed off. Wouldn't ya know...the whine got real loud...blown Transfer case after 3 weeks and less than 200 miles with the replacement No abuse or anything...but spouts of flooring it from time to time
If the 05s are better...there might be one in my future

3 weeks?!? My question is...if they keep replacing the transfer case with the same part ...won't it keep breaking?
Any info on the 05s t-case yet?

That's one of the main reasons that I traded the 03' of a 05'. I pretty sure (correct me if I'm wrong) that the USDM 05' 5 speeds are the same as the JDM evo VIIs. The VIIs have been going for years with no problems like what the 03's and 04's have been going through.

From what he described, the "death whine" he got sounds like a bearing died. Here are some probable causes for the bearing failure:
1) preloads were set incorrectly (factory defect)
2) too thin of an oil was used, spec is SAE90 (installer error)
3) forgot to fill up oil (installer error)
The 05 t-cases have a front LSD, which is a little stronger than the 03/04's open front diff. The 05s also have the ACD stuff in the t-case, which most likely doesn't affect the strength of the t-case (someone correct me if I'm wrong).

If the t-case is bad, will you hear it every time in a decel situation or occasionally. I think, I hear loud whinning noise twice, both times in heavy rain, I though that's my abs brake noise...
