Alright, who wants to come ice racing with me in Colorado in February?

Guys and gals,

A group of friends and myself are organizing a private track rental of the Bridgestone Winter Driving School in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. Advan wearers need not apply.

Here's the deal:
The only prerequisites are:
You must have completed a 1/2 day course at Bridgestone (which you can do the day before the event)
You must have all wheel drive
You must have snow tires without studs

This is the most fun you're ever going to have in a car with your pants on. As opposed to a dry track, there is no line here. The line is wherever the snowbanks aren't.

There will mostly be Audi quattros there, and as of right now, I'm the only Evo there. Hell, I'm driving all the way from NY just to do this event, FWIW. It'd be nice to see some of you locals from CO show up, you just might learn something.

Damn I'll have to look into that. Looks like great fun. I have Dunlop Winter tires w/o studs so that'd be perfect.

This event compresses about 3 HPDE's into one and is very useful in teaching skid control and just having fun.

I'll be there with my 15" blizzaks. :-)

No studs, no chains, no bolts, no studs, just skinny rubber and a prayer. Since it's solid ice, the chains/studs/etc will tear it up and we won't be allowed back.

FWIW, the tire to use out there is the Blizzak WS-50, incredible ice tire. There may be better tires in the slush or wet snow, but nothing can touch it on ice. 205/60/15 for me.

Evoisadream,
Kumho what? Go for Blizzak WS-50's if you can swing it.

I know this isn't a tire war, but I beg to differ about the best ice tire. I have ice-racing experience back with my Subaru, and the best ice tire was the Green Diamond Icelander with the molded in carbide flecks. They were entirely street legal, cheap, and awesome on the ice. Too bad they don't make 17" sizes.

just out of curiosity, would someone with all-seasons qualify or do they actually check for dedicated snow tires?

Trust me as someone with experience ice racing, you would not have fun with all-seasons regardless if they let you in. You would be all over the place, and not make much forward progress. Plus, hitting a snow bank with a nice car is not fun when you hear the crunch. You'll want snow tires for control and to protect your car.
