cruising at 3.5k rpm

For example in 3rd gear and im cruising at exactly 3 or 3.5k rpm, is the turbo constantly being used? I sometimes cruise at this rpm range for a few blocks.

3500 rpm is where the turbo spools stock, so thats when the turbo begins to spin

Actually if your asking if the turbo is being used, its always spinning no matter what RPM your in.. If the engine is running under vacuum, not producing boost, then its no different than cruising in 5th gear at highway speeds.. If your putting load on the engine and the engine vaccum drops, its begining to generate boost then its "Being used" in your terms..

There's always a small level of positive pressure in the upper intercooler pipe, even at idle..
but driving a few blocks in third gear at that RPM will not put you into boost unless your foot is in and your accelerating.

I drive for very long periods at 3000-3500 rpm, you can stay out of boost pretty easy if you don't smash the pedal to the floor.

this is my first turbo car and my first problem was that when i was out cruising, i was keepin' it at about 3.5krpm. whenever i'd hit a good bump or hole, my foot would jerk just enough to hit boost, causing the car to jerk back n' forth. i stay just under 3krpm when cruising now, so i'm far enough away from boost that it won't happen anymore. and if you suddenly need to accelerate while cruising to pass traffic or something, you can always downshift to get your rpms up.

heck, just drive in 4th -- put you little under 3k..and if you need to you can down shift and have some fun!

Boost builds when the engine is under load.

At that RPM range, once you mash the gas, you have instant boost response.

As apposed to going WOT at 2k rpm and waiting for the turbo to spool.

Like MalibuJack said the turbo is constantly spinning but is only "used" (being put to work as in putting more stress on the turbo) when you are boosting under loads.

OT: What is the best cruising RPM for the engine? 3500K? Say for like 10 hours highway driving?
