cold weather overheat...please read

Ok so here in jersey today its 9 degrees outside with a windchill of -20. First cold day like this of the year. I get into my evo and start it up (let it warm up for about 5minutes) then go to drive to work and half way there it starts to overheat. I pull over way before it reaches the redline on the gauge pop the hood (which was frozen shut) and the motor is ice cold. Now i am thinking that the thermostat did not open. not to sure what really is going on i drive home stopping every couple of miles cause the thermostat rises slow after about 2 miles.... checked the coolant there is no oil in it. (first thing that pops in mind is headgasket.) I am gonna go back out there when it warms up to the high of 16 degrees and try to work on it. Anyone else have this problem????? first time its happen to me and i have had the car almost 2 years. car has 35000 miles on it and great compression in all 4 cylinders....

hmmm maybe your mix of radiator coolant is too much water not enough of the concentrate.

i would recommend going to a shop and getting your radiator flushed and filled with antifreeze

Don't run that motor until you get the antifreeze situation straightened out. You'll crack the block or warp the head.

you may have an air pocket in your coolant system, does your heat work inside your car? Check the coolant level... let it run till it warms up fully and fill the system. Make sure you have the proper mix of coolant or you may freeze your lines and block, not a good situation.

if no heat was working I'm willing to bet money you have an air pocket... let the car cool down, open your coolant cap, start the car up and fill up the radiator. Keep running the car for 10-15 min adding water/coolant here and there, you'll hear the fan kick on and the thermostat will open, fill it till it's completely full. Your heat should work after that and the coolant temps will drop.

You've got problems...... In the old days I'd say you have either no coolant (or not enough coolant) in the radiator/engine or your coolant is frozen.....
I'd try to get that car into a heated area and see if you have popped a freeze plug or have some sort of cracked block or warped head..... If you are lucky, nothing is busted and the coolant just got slushy and wont circulate well through the system. Otherwise you've got low coolant or no coolant.... Good chance of serious damage... Sorry about that.....

Also was you notified of the recall for your fan control module? A problem with that module can cause your car to overheat while standing still..

Your best bet is to tow it to the dealer and have them check that the coolant didn't freeze, and that the fan controller is ok.

Another thought, I think our heater has a bypass valve.. It may not open unless the coolant temp is at a particular level or whatnot.. so it may not be air in the system.. But definitely be 100% certain you didn't just freeze the engine. I was concerned of the same thing when I took my car out this morning.. That and the Buschur mini battery.. I had no troubles though.

thanks guys.....just flushed the radiator.....last time my car was in the shop they did not do a 50/50 it looked like there was 70/30 water being the higher amount. I refilled 50/50 and now the car runs perfect..... thank god for no major problems.... i stopped running the car as soon as it started to get a little past half way so its not like i drove it overheating.
