I agree with wicked 05, knowledge and patience is power. Wjen i went in to buy my evo i was shocked. The salesman was looking for the car on the lot. Personally, i would know where the fastest car is on my lot. After they gave me their offer i gave them my low offer. It seemed like all they wanted to talk about was payments. I hate this. I want to talk car price, not payment, what i will be paying in the end. So i walked out and waited three weeks, to my surprise they called me back and said ok to my low price. Still, i will never buy a car from that dealership again.

Same thing happened to me while buying my evo back in 03' at Glendale Mitsubishi. I told them i wanted a white one with sunroof and wing. They said they had one. So i also went ahead and bought the car. The day of delivery i see someone pulling up with a white evo and i was told that this one was my own.. i look at the odo and it read 59 miles. I didn't really care as long as i had my evo at the time being so excited an all. But everything starts going downhill from there... After i got home i realized they gave me the wrong spare keys meaning someone else out there has the same problem as me... Also a couple months back some kids had the great idea of having a batting practice session with my car's windshield.. this was totally random, it happened while i was visiting my friend. I then had to order a 500$ original windshield from Glendale Mitsubishi. Then they told me i had to take the windshield myself to the auto glass shop... I had to borrow a truck from a friend, drop off the windshield myself at a GHETTO auto glass shop which i was refered to by Glendale Mitsubishi once again...(The first thing the auto glass shop guy said to me as i was leaving to get my car was.. '' We are not responsible for what happens to this windshield''.. so meaning that if they wanted to JACK my brand new windshild they could...) I then went picked up my car and drove it with a shattered windshield all the way to LA... where the auto glass store is.. I left the place with my car and came back a few hours later.. The job was done and i thought it was a decent one.. WRONG again.. I get home and i realize that there is finger mark stains all over my roofliner.. I was totally pissed at this. Being the kind of person that can't stand a dirty car interior, ESPECIALLY my own.. The windshield nightmare doesn't end yet.. One night while i was driving down the 210 fwy during the santa ana winds a headwind blows through my car and guess what happens?? Glass shards start flying off the defroster vents.. I always get heated when i think about what happened to me... The same day I went to order my windshield i asked them to replace my floormatts because they had a giant hole on them (I always wear tennis shoes). They obviously didn't replace them so I went ahead and bought a brand new original set... I don't know why they didn't do this for me. Is not like I didn't buy one of the most expensive cars they sell. It's not like im asking for a brand new clutch~!

I, for one, had a pleasant experience.
The key to getting a good "deal" is knowing how to handle yourself - AND - having all your research done ahead of time. Let them know that THEY have to sell you the car. Let them know that you'll walk if you don't think you're getting a good deal.
I chose Darcar's Mitsubishi because of the feedback I got on them from the local regional sections of the web boards. They are a big volume dealership so you know they move volume and will be able to work with you.
I knew everything about the car so when I met up with the salesman he could tell I knew it was a performance machine.
I also told him that I was going to stop at a few more places before I decided to buy.
After I decided which car I wanted I decided to talk to him about numbers. I knew how much I was willing to spend so I started with that as a target price.
They counter offered - with a reasonable offer - but I decided I would wait till they would meet my price - and was ready to walk. I stood up, placed my business card on his desk, and said "if you want to make a sale - give me a call," and started to walk out.
They practically tried to bar the door when I threatened to leave.
They came back with an offer too good to refuse so I bought it right then and there.
They treated me with respect and made the whole experience a pleasant one.
The car was washed and detailed before given to me. I would definitely recommend them to anyone.
I even got a security system thrown in.

I didn't have a problem buying the car... I got my evo in 03, I walked in said I want a black evo with the CF wing nothing else (I first told them I wanted the small wing but later changed my mind) I also only want to pay $27,000.... They said ohhh man we can't do that, So i was like well this dealership can and was like do it or I walk, he came back 10 min later saying we can do $27,600 mind you this was a couple months after the car came out....I said sold. He then says we have 2 black ones which do you want? I said I will come back during the day to go over them with a fine tooth comb. Got my evo with 3 miles on it no problems AT ALL! Now getting them to service the car is a totally different sotry.....

they also told me that they had come down A LOT on the price of the evo. they didn't drop the price more than $500, but they gave me the impression that they brought it down close to cost.
the salesman even had the guts to come up to me as i was leaving to get in my new evo and tell me that they made so little on this deal that they couldn't afford to give me my second key!!!!! i fell for it 'cus this is my first new car and didn't realize that leaving the lot with only 1 key/remote is considered ludicris. they made money on the evo (more than they led me to believe) AND they made money on the jeep. i should really have demanded a second key!
i could've avoided all these mistakes if i'd not trusted them and really looked at the paperwork - but i've bought 2 used cars in the past and those deals worked out great, so i trusted that this deal would be the same.
and to think...all this time i thought it was the USED car dealers that were the shady ones!

Help needed
Well I don’t have any experience with a dealer yet (or any other) but I plan on buying an 05 GSR in about 3 months. I just want to know what would be a good deal considering I want an 05 that is 3 months old and no options out of central Jersey. Money is going to be tight and I don’t want to pay anymore than I really have to. I know its going to be a little difficult, they are going to see a 21 year old and think I have no experience buying a new car (which they are right) and try to take advantage of it . This is the last thing I want to happen so if someone could give me some figures I should shoot for, and some good info to go into the dealer with I would really appreciate it. Also I tried to schedule a test drive from Bell in Rahway NJ and was told that they don’t let anyone test drive the EVO . You could only test drive after the paper work has been started, then if you don’t like it then you could cancel the paperwork. Now that is only if you are looking for a car on the lot, if you order a car, they said you will not be able test drive one on the lot before you order under any circumstances. I think that is such BS, how can you buy a 30k+ car and not ever drive it. That’s like marrying a chick over the internet with only seeing a pic of her. Looks good, sounds like a good choice, but havent got the test drive yet!
Any input would be great.

I have to agree with most of you, that salesmen are slugs. Kinda reminds me of the movie Pink Cadillac.
Anyways, I did shop around. I believe I went to 4 different dealerships till I found the one I wanted. One dealership was even to try and sell me on a color they picked out. They wanted me to buy an Apex Silver, but I wanted a BBY. Well I got my BBY and not from that dealership. Actually I have had my car exactly 1 year and 3 days.

I give that statement a 7/10 for creativity and a 10/10 for BS. I point blank looked at the guy and said, "you know that's bull$hit, right?". He ran off and got another slimeball to back-up his story. Well now I know there's at least 2 fu*ktards working the same lot. I gave a fake phone number and got the hell out of there. Dealerships that hire people like that should be restricted from selling anything but base model Lancers IMHO.

I had a problem with a headlight not working and they blamed the headlight relay harness off my alarm for my remote starter. I am a certified installer, installed the alarm myself and SPECIFICALLY did not install that harness because I did not want my headlights turning on with my remote start.
Just because you bought an evo and you say the dealers are f*cktards when selling them, they are f*cktards all around I have news for you. They do anything and make up anything to make a sale.

No way, they kept trying to justify a good deal. Finally, being lucky, my dads friend owned and operated the dealer and i walked out the door with the car for 15,500 with all the options I wanted back in 2002. I have had nothing buy problems bringing the car back for warranty and such. They flat out suck.

You have to admit though that if you were a salesguy selling Evos would beat the hell out of selling base model Lancers.

Either way they are still trying to do the same thing in the end, make a commission on your stupidity. I know how it works. You could be selling a Geo Metro for 5k brand new and they still want a big comission so if they get u to pay 7k then so be it.

i agree with what dryad said - i wish i would've known that i could go to different dealerships and get different experiences. i figured all mitsu. dealers would be the same since it's all mitsu.
NOT THE CASE AT ALL.
if you don't like bell's policy of no test drives till you've started paperwork, then find another dealer. be as picky as jerry and george are about the women they date on seinfeld - if there's even one thing you don't like about 'em, dump 'em.
even if you have to visit 15 dealerships to find the one you like, and the one you like ends up being an hour away, don't sweat it. finding a straight-up dealer will save you so much money a month that the hassel will be worth it.
as an example of savings, i'm paying $560 a month and i firmly believe i could be paying no more than $450 a month. but i didn't shop around because i thought the deal would be the same at any building with the triple-diamonds on it. i was wrong.
good luck buying your new evo!

I work for a Toyota dealership in MA. That treatment is unacceptable. The salesman there is unprofessional. After buying or servicing a NEW vehicle, you will be sent a survey. Just put how you were treated and that's how you get them back. Slam their CSI (Customer Service Index).
