Unfortunately a large percentage of today's "mechanics" are just that, they are good at working on mechanical things, they learned along time ago on antiquated equipment and don’t keep with the times, they stick to what they know.

Today's cars and especially the Evo are very electronically sophisticated, to the point where you'd almost need an engineering degree to diagnose something sometimes, but that’s no excuse not to train your techs in electronics... Or even proper troubleshooting, I find half of the time a great mechanic can do what he knows real well (experience), but when it come to diagnosing something unfamiliar they are lost (intelligence). Training tech's to be both electronically and mechanically proficient should not be an option for a dealer, it should be a requirement, its a great disservice to the customer when you say you have this great 10/100 warranty only to find that the person actually doing the warranty work is not up to speed on your car, almost like false advertising... How are you "backing" my car? Sell me the warranty and hope I never need it? And If I do need it waste my time with improper diagnoses?

Dealer excuses are just that, Excuses, this is why they are losing money. They charge way too much for poor service. That’s why most people with cars not in warranty wouldn't go near a dealer...

Its time for a change people... Hiring a 20 year old kid and sending him to classes and having him read service manuals to save a buck is not a recipe for a good mechanic... (No offense to any 20 year olds )

Anyone who calls themselves a mechanic is not who I want working my brand new car, 1960's muscle car? Sure. But today, we need real technicians...

I'd ask them if they have ever seen an all wheel drive car lock up a differential while in motion. Point them in the direction of the Eclipse GSX Recall for the transfer case lockup problem.

I'm not saying that you should truely fear that the diff is going to lock up, but you could use this scare tactic on them to get them to really start looking at the problem a bit more seriously. I wouldn't buy the whole "Ah, walk it off. You'll be fine." story they are trying to feed you.
