If it is really bad and repetive knock you will hear it. Basically it sounds like coins in a tin can being bounced around. But you can't always hear it and you can't always listen for it. If you want a gauge it is really hard to get anything that can sample fast enough where you could read it. Knock Link is about the only thing that I know of as in a gauge type that can actually measure using your knock sensor. Other than that you must have a standalone that supports knock callibrations like the AEM to be able to see what is good and what is bad on your car and actually handle knock accordingly. Every car is just a little bit different but the AEM does one great job of handeling knock if you are tuned correctly.

To be able to see knock you will need something that can sample the sound/voltage at every cylinder spark so it picks up the noise at the time of ignition otherwise background noise can get to be a issue was well.

Hope this helps you out.
