Want the ring & pinion to last inside the transfer case? Use Diaqueen LSD Gear Oil. Part # 3775610. Change it often, like every 5000 miles.

Want the stock powdered metal spider gears to last? Take it easy on the launch, no clutch dumps, especially if you have a HD clutch.

Jon, how can you tell if your ring and pinion gears are worn? Can you tell by driving? How would they look if you inspected the gears?

I always thought whining was due to dead/dying bearings.

The way the hypoid gears in the differntial works is by a sliding action between the gears. If they are improperly lubricated the teeth will wear against each other and you will develop grooves along the face of the teeth. The groaning you hear is from the grooves of the teeth passig over each other instead of nice smooth surfaces. The downside of this is that the teeth can't be repaired once they hit this point.

does anyone know how you can tell if your spider gears are going/gone?

the spider gearing is for the front diff, which is in the t-case right?

would there be a notchiness in turning/slight grinding sound if there were a problem?

thanks in advance

Just fill the transfer case with Diaqueen and let the transmission do the rest.

The transfer case has 2 oils inside of it that are separated by a bunch of oil seals to keep the two oils from mixing.

Diaqueen LSD Gear Oil to lubricate the ring & pinion in the transfer case.

The front differential is also located inside the transfer case, yet it is sealed off from the ring & pinion inside of a sealed metal housing, and it receives oil from the transmission by way of an oil feed passage that allows the oil to pass through and lubricate the front diff. From there this oil flows back into the transmission.

More on this can by found by using the all mighty search engine.
