I really appreciate your help.
Frankly, I don't know what changed. I can only tell you my clutch and the only other 03 I drove was much heavier then my friend's new 05.
The difference is so significant that it's hard for me to believe "no change" or "production variations". Unless Mitsu's QA is totally out of control.
The changes I can think of that would change paddle force without changing spring pressure are as follows.
Smaller master clutch cylinder
Larger slave clutch cylinder
Different clutch paddle lever arm
Longer lever arm on the clutch release fork
I'm sure there are other things that can change the clutch effort, but that all I can pull out of my a$$ at the moment.

Adding to the oddities:
I've driven both an 03 and an MR, I feel there is a difference of about an inch in driver seat height between the 2 of them? I'm not the only one but my friends who have sat on the drivers seats of both cars, to test out my observation also noted the same thing. Weird ...
Also, yes, the shifter is much smoother than the 03 ....
Clutch on my 05MR feels light with the engagement point high, compared to my friends 03 with an ACT clutch (ofcourse!) ...
