what bike
I could understand your argument on insurance but being that the Harley is worth more than the Sport bikes what the insurance company wont charge you for performance they will charge you for liability, its a lose lose situation with them. All in all this is whats sleeps next to my EVO every night. It VERY comfortable on long trips, I don't know if you ever sat on one or rode on but you should give it a little more thought and research, unless you are set on one of those 2 bikes already.

883 I'd say no to that.
That Ducati
I'd go with a Harley Harley for sale I just posted this last night on here.
You'll want to go bigger, I first had a sporster 2003 edition and I liked it but it wan't enough, I traded it i for the Fatboy. The ride is day and night compared to the Sportster.

i voted for the ducati but you have to remember maintanace will be more expensive and if you go on long trips and it does happen to break down they dont have ducati parts in the middle of nowhere

so i am told..ducatis are perdy reliable motorcycles. and harleys are everywhere you could breakdown and find some guy thats had harleys for 30 years and will know exactly whats wrong and could fix it faster than a dealer
also just for the record everybody. i dont live in montana with no speed limits. i have trouble stretching the legs out on my evo so a 200mph busa is pointless for me. my dad and uncle had bikes before my time and i alwayed loved just being on a bike and the smell they have and the sound. its not always about speed people we got to remember that.

Ducati
Or another alternative ... SV650S ... It comes from that same 'appeal' that probably made the EVO the way it is. That is a rally bred, fire spitting, car-on-rails monster. The SV is a race-bred twin, lightweight, commuter / take it to the track anyday, fun machine.
For the sake of this thread ... Ducati.
