Or you could just cycle your engine and fill it up in the first place

That's definitely true.

But my method is actually similar to yours. I pour in 4.5 qts. Turn on the engine to check for any leaks, let it idle for a couple of minutes, then shut her down. After about 5 mins, I check the oil level.

I'm worried about people who check the oil right after shutting down. That doesn't give you an accurate reading. Perhaps I read your post wrong.

i dont think all the oil would return to the pan in 5 minutes... maybe an hour?

No I just only run it for a few seconds. That isn't enough time to really draw a lot of oil away, but just enough to pressurize the system and get it into the other spots that it might settle. I don't let it sit. I am about to go check my level again (just did an oil change). I will see where it is. Last time I checked it was right at the cut where it tapers in on the dip stick.

remember that the amount of oil that will be required will depend on if you're doing a hot or cold oil change. ideally, when you first remove the filter and drain the oil from the pan, the engine should be dead cold, like in the morning or something, so that all the oil will drain. this will require more on the side of 5 qts. however, if you do a hot change, then you will not be able to drain the last bit of oil, and you will side more with the 4.5 or so qts.

benny
oil flows better when it's hot.. so doesnt that mean, u'll drain it more when it is hot?
