Evolution 1
1992-1993




The first Lancer Evolution was the actual homologation model, created to be more competitive and incorporating the wealth of know-how that Mitsubishi rally teams had accumulated over years of successful participation in rallies the world over. Developed to win in the WRC, Evolution I was distinguished chiefly by its power unit. The production Lancer series had for some time offered models powered by a 1.8-liter intercooler-turbocharged engine. Evolution I, however, inherited the 2-liter 4G63-type in-line 4-cylinder DOHC intercooler-turbocharged plant that had powered the Galant VR4 to success in the WRC.

For Evolution I, the engine was given a larger-capacity intercooler, a higher compression ratio, modified port configuration, new injectors, and lighter crankshaft, con rods and pistons. These changes resulted in a 10PS increase in maximum power to 250PS at 6000 rpm, and maximum torque of 31.5Kg-m at 3000rpm. Evolution I also inherited the VR-4 driveline. Modifications included the use of double-cone synchromesh on second gear for improved shift action and durability, an uprated clutch with more positive pedal action.

To match the heavier front end and the substantial increase in suspention inputs, the body underwent a major strengthening and stiffness optimization program resulting in a 20% increase in torsional stiffness over the base model. To alleviate the weight increase stemming from the extra reinforcement, the vibration-damping undercoat was totally eliminated; a practice that was continued up to Evolution V (RS model).

Evolution's suspension used MacPherson strut and a multi-link arrangement to locate and control the front and rear wheels respectively. Optimized to increase stiffness, pillow ball upper mounts were used to replace rubber bushings on the rear upper and lower control arms and the outer control links. Evolution's exterior was distinguished at the front by an aluminum engine hood with large air outlets, and open grille-integral front bumper extended 40mm forwards to house the uprated intercooler unit. At the rear, a large reardeck spoiler reduced lift by 18%. At 1,170kg (RS), Evolution I weighed substantially less than the 1,350kg of Galant VR-4 and with the extra 10PS squeezed out of its engine, this well-finished sports sedan delivered superb performance on the road.

Evolution 2
1994-1995




Launched in 1994, Evolution II incorporated a number of modifications designed to boost its performance, handling stability in particular. In line with the original plan to boost engine power by 10PS with each generation, modifications to the engine included an increase in turbo boost pressure, reduced exhaust back pressure and increased valve lift. These changes pushed engine output up to 260PS at 6000 rpm, with torque remaining at 31.5Kg-m at 3000 rpm.

An increase in the number of tarmac stages in WRC events meant improvements were called for in Evolution's handling. Modifications in Evolution II included: the use of larger wheels and tires, the wheelbase was extended by moving the front wheel center 10mm forward, and the front and rear tracks widened 15mm and 10mm respectively to accommodate the fatter tires. With its larger diameter tires, Evolution II stood 25mm taller.

Optimization of the front suspension following these changes included: the use of new lower control arms and longer struts; the front stabilizer was attached directly to the lower control arms to quicken steering responce, and front camber was optimized. Together with a longer damper bump stroke and other detail improvements, these changes brought a dramatic improvement to Evolution II's handling performance, making for quicker response and raising its cornering limit, particularly on tarmac surfaces.

In the aerodynamics department, Evolution II gained an airdam under the front bumper, while the addition of a wicker increased the effectiveness of the reardeck spoiler. The use of OZ alloy road wheels, with their powerful rally image, and other styling touches also made Evolution II a more attractive machine.

1995




The third-generation Evolution debuted in 1995, boasting another 10PS increase in power output. The engine was tuned to run at higher speeds, pumping out 270PS at 6250rpm, with maximum torque unchanged at 31.5Kg-m at 3000rpm. Changes to the engine included: reduced back pressure throughout the exhaust system, the result of a fatter front exhaust pipe and lower pressure losses in the main muffler; a new turbocharger compressor; and a higher compression ratio. The most significant improvements introduced in Evolution III were to its aerodynamics. With ever-increasing speeds over fast rally stages requiring even better aerodynamic performance, Evolution III's aero parts specification underwent a full redesign.

The front bumper openings were enlarged, and a larger airdam fitted that featured brake-cooling ducts and transfer-cooling slots. Lowering ground clearance reduced airflow under the body to generate extra downforce. The front airdam lines were continued into the sides, along the large side airdams and into the rear wheel house, visually tightening up the rear end and serving as a rear side airdam. A larger wing and wicker in the reardeck spoiler generated additional downforce. These changes gained FIA homologation and proved their worth in WRC events.

There were no major changes to body stiffness or the suspension in the new model. However, the addition of a second intercooler spray nozzle helped stabilize power and torque characteristics at high engine speeds. Without a doubt, Evolution III delivered the highest levels of refined performance in the series to date.

With the continous development put into the EVO over the past years, 1996 saw the Evolution have a major remake. The 4G63 power plant was remained as with the previous models, but it underwent extensive modifications. Introduced was the use of a high-speed cam and lighter pistons.

The EVO IV was refined in a way in which it reduced turbo lag by minimizing the gas flow interference within the exhaust manifold. In came a twin-scroll turbocharger which had improved supercharging performance, generating more torque in the low and medium range rpms. The EVO IV also featured a newer and redefined intake manifold which was straighter.

The introduction of a secondary air induction system improved turbo on-off response by feeding pressurized air above the turbine and reducing negative pressure, thereby keeping turbine speed from dropping under deceleration. With all the newer technology onboard, a substantial increase in engine performance was displayed, pushing the maximum power output up to 206kW at 6500 rpm and maximum torque to 353Nm at 3000 rpm.

The EVO IV RS model, developed primarily as a base vehicle for motorsport, was developed with a torque-adaptive helical gear limited-slip front differential which was a world first on a 4WD model. The EVO IV rear differential incorporated another world first: Active Yaw Control. Generating a stabilizing yaw moment by creating a torque differential in the rear wheels, AYC realized a significant improvement in cornering performance and in vehicle stability under hard braking.

1998



1997 marked the debut of the new FIA-approved World Rally Car class, its use restricted to WRC events. But Mitsubishi Motors decided to continue with the Lancer Evolution in Group A, this class being much closer structurally to the production model.

Launched in 1998, Evolution V was given a wider track to stay competitive against the World Rally Car class,. Evolution V measured in with a front track of 1510mm and rear track of 1505mm, while overall width was extended to the 1770mm limit permitted by the regulations using aluminum front fenders and macho rear over-fenders. Evolution V ran on new 17-inch wheels shod with wide 225/45R17 rubber as standard.

At the front, aerodynamic and cooling performance was enhanced with a canard-spoiler under the front bumper and larger grille openings to match the uprated radiator. The outlets in the aluminum engine hood were enlarged and reshaped for better heat extraction. While retaining the delta-shaped wicker, the reardeck spoiler was optimized for position and used an aluminum wing with adjustable attack angle.

The suspension was optimized for the wider track. The front gained a camber adjuster and inverted struts. While overall stiffness was beefed up, wheel stroke lengthened and steering gearbox relocated, weight was reduced and geometry optimized. At the rear, improvements were made to all inner and outer pivot points, geometry was optimized, weight reduced and stiffness substantially increased.

The rear roll center was also optimized to realize more responsive behavior and better tire-road contact. With the larger wheels and tires, braking was upgraded with Brembo 17-inch ventilated disc with 4-pot calipers at the front and 16- inch ventilated disc with 2-pot calipers at the rear. The use of turbocharger nozzles with larger surface areas increased maximum torque to 38.0Kg-m at 3000rpm.



1. Vehicular performance

2.0-litre DOHC intercooler-turbocharged engine
The new Evolution V generates maximum output of 280 PS and torque of 38.0 kg-m (2.0 kg-m more than Evolution IV) using an upgraded intercooler, enlarged nozzle area in the twin-scroll turbocharger, lighter pistons, and upgraded radiator and oil-cooler.

Close-ratio transmission
The new Evolution V uses a close-ratio gearbox which, together with a stiffer linkage and shorter shift lever, realizes more direct and positive operation and better shift feel.

Suspension and handling
Longer lower arms in the front and changes to the arm attachment points in the rear suspension widen the track 40mm at the front and 35mm at the rear over Evolution IV. This, together with stiffer toe and camber resulting from the use of inverted struts at the front, results in improved cornering stability.

Tires
Evolution V uses 225 / 45ZR17 tires, improving grip and realizing a substantial increase in cornering limits.

Brakes
To match the improved dynamic performance, Evolution V uses Brembo 17-inch 4-pot caliper brakes at the front and 16-inch 2-pot caliper brakes at the rear. (16-inch 2-pot caliper at front and 15-inch single-pot caliper at rear on Evolution IV). The result is less fade and more stable braking at high brake temperatures.

Adaptive yaw control
Evolution V achieves optimal torque distribution to all four wheels by combining a helical limited slip differential in the front transaxle with Mitsubishi's own AYC (Active Yaw Control) system that generates a stabilizing yaw moment by creating a torque differential in the right and left wheels. The result is improved cornering performance and stability on all surfaces.



2. Exterior

Styling
Contributing to Evolution V's outstanding aerodynamics is a full range of redesigned aeroparts, including the impressive aluminum engine hood, wide fenders, front and rear bumpers, as well as front, side and rear airdams.

Aero-tuning
Evolution V sports a delta-shaped wicker and adjustable rear deck spoiler that provides four different angle of attack settings for the wing to optimally match all driving speeds.

Wheels
Evolution V uses a new design of OZ 17-inch alloy road wheels.

Colors
Evolution V is offered in a choice of five body colors: Scotia White, Satellite Blue, Pyrenean Black, Palmar Red and Dandelion Yellow (factory option).



3. Interior

Seats
A new design of Recaro bucket seat provides improved hold and occupant location.

Steering wheel
Evolution V uses a MOMO leather steering wheel and leather shift knob.

Color coordination
The interior uses black throughout to accent the models sporty design and nature.

Evolution 6 GSR
1991-2000





The Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution V won the 1998 WRC manufacturer's title, and Tommi Makinen earned the driver's title in the same year. The continuing refinement of the car for the 1999 Rally season led to the Development of the Evolution VI.

The street car version of the Evolution VI was announced in January, 1999 and utilizes the experience derived from rallying. Power is transferred through Full-time 4WD transmission to the wheels, the front features a helical limited slip differencial, the center is equipped with viscious LSD, the rear has an Active Yaw control differential.






Major Changes over LANCER GSR Evolution V

Exterior and interior
Engine cooling and vehicle aerodynamics have been improved: by offsetting the license plate position in the front bumper, and by the addition of an oil cooler ventilator and air blow ducting. The use of twin Wicker-type rear spoilers with adjustable attack angle that conforms to 1999 WRC regulations enables Evolution VI to generate the same downforce as its predecessor.

The interior gets a classier and sportier appearance with the use of black and blue upholstery for the Recaro seats, genuine leather-wrapped steering wheel, leather-trim shift knob, and blue stitching in the shift lever boot. Legibility of instrumentation has been improved with blue dial faces and by optimizing the scale graduations. Evolution VI is offered in five attractive colors: Rheims Blue, Satellite Silver, Pyrenean Black, Scotia White and Ijssel Blue. Evolution VI uses a new design of 17-inch alloy road wheels made by OZ.

Performance
Cornering performance has been improved: by lowering the roll center of the front suspension; by using aluminum alloy arms and lengthening the rebound stroke in the rear suspension; and by optimizing strut damping and stabilizer characteristics. Evolution VI is powered by a 2.0-liter DOHC intercooler-turbocharged engine with air to oil cooler. Engine cooling has been improved: by changing the water temperature regulation, by adding cooling channels to the pistons, and by using a high-volume oil cooler.

A larger diameter air intake hose and turbocharger air intake port are used to realize improved high-end power output and response. Braking performance has been improved by using more rigid calipers in the Brembo brake system, which has 17-inch 4-pot caliper brakes at the front and 16-inch 2-pot caliper brakes at the rear.







The Exterior
The first modifications centered on the aggressive exterior. On the right side of the bumper, the oil cooler air intake was enlarged and an air outlet on the right side was created to improve the radiator airflow, the license plate was offset to the left.

Rear Spolier
The rear spolier is a delta type twin wicker with adjustable angle on the upper wing, this increases downforce for extra stability.

Engine
Reliable, abundant power is provided by the 4G63 2 litre 4-cylinder engine with an intercooled turbocharger.

Wheels and Tires
The Evo VI Uses OZ Wheels 17 inch Super Turismo's Wrapped around Michellin 225 / 45ZR17.

The Interior
The interior gets a classier and sportier appearance with the use of black and blue upholstery for the Recaro seats, genuine leather-wrapped steering wheel, leather-trim shift knob, and blue stitching in the shift lever boot. Evolution 6 RS
1999-2000





The RS version of the EVO VI is designed for entry in motor sport events. With lighter onboard parts and no luxury features, it makes the EVO VI RS lighter and easier to control when in performance.

Air conditioning, central locking, and other features have been removed. The RS has smaller measurements and sizes but retains a stronger Shell and lighter Accessories such as Front bumper and rear wing.

The turbocharger uses a titanium alloy turbine-a world-first-for reduced intake pressure losses and improved response and high-end power output. Available is a double plate clutch that reduces losses in rapid torque transmission under race conditions.

Evolution 6 RS-2
1999-2000






The Evo VI RS2 is the proper ready-for-use motorsport special with the only changes being the addition of air conditioning, airbags and electric windows.

The Difference between the GSR and the RS-2?
The Difference is that the RS-2 has a bodyshell with gussets, braces and reinforcements designed to withstand Various Rallies. The Bonnet and front guards are lightweight, aliminium items and the front airdam contains the trick ducting to the brakes and very clever air-duct to the oil cooler which exits through the bumper bar. The RS-2 also has a Competition turbocharger with a titanium alloy impeller and all the plumbing and hardware for the anti-lag system.

The Intercooler is the competition model used on the Group A Rally Cars and has twin water sprays to further lower temperatures. The RS-2 Gets ultra-close gearbox ratios 'Rally Version' were 3rd, 4th and 5th are moved even closer together. The steering rack is the quick-ratio version with just 1.8 turns lock-to-lock and theres a power steering cooler neatly positioned between the radiator and the intercooler.

The Evo VI RS-2 Production numbers were 957 units. 800 were Left Hand Drive and 157 were made Right Hand Drive.

Evolution 6 Tommi Makinen Edition
2000-2001



This model was developed to commemorate works driver Tommi Makinen's unprecedented feat of taking four consecutive WRC Drivers Championships when he won the championship in 1999. The Tommi Makinen Edition sported an exclusive exterior trim and coloring and interior design and trim based on the works machine. The engine and suspension were tuned for optimum performance and handling on tarmac.

In its exterior appearance, the auxiliary lights were removed from the oversize front bumper in an exclusive design giving priority to aerodynamic performance. Standard on Tommi Makinen Edition were the same 17-inch alloy road wheels as the WRC works machine. Reproducing the details of the works car, a special coloring package was offered as a factory option. The WRC works car theme was continued inside with: a red color scheme, RECARO bucket seats carrying the Tommi Makinen logo, red-stitch leather trim for the MOMO steering wheel and shift lever knob, and red-on-black graphics instrumentation. The Tommi Makinen Edition used the same twin-scroll turbocharger with titanium alloy turbine as Evolution VI, with optimized compressor wheel size and blade configuration. Ducts in the front bumper cool engine intake air.

Other features exclusive to Tommi Makinen Edition include a large-diameter tail pipe and sports muffler that reduce exhaust pressure losses and noise, and a new-design fuel tank reservoir cup that stops fuel from surging to one side under high-G cornering. Overall height was lowered 10mm, while front and rear roll center height was optimized. Handling response was also enhanced with the use of front strut tower bars and a quicker steering gear ratio.

Little information is available about the TM-V4. So, what is it you ask?

The TM-V4 is apparently a Step 1 Kit for the TME which decreases inhalation resistance. A New air filter, radiator cap, injection-valve open pressure 127 KP, a newer radiator hose set made of the silicon make which is superior in durability and ignition energy. Also included is a new sparkplug cable set, sport shift knob and the TM-V4 bonnet sticker.

The TM-V4 uses 18 x 8 alloys 235/40 Pilot Sport tyres and a body kit that attempts to disguise the shape's age. Only 50 units were supposedly made - Furthermore, a separate installation payment occurs in installing of the parts.

There has probably been more confusion with the Zero Fighter then any other EVO VI model to date. The Evo VI Zero Fighter that were all more then likely familiar with is this Silver one from the UK. If you've read the article over at Warrender then you would know that this car is infact a GSR spec with AYC rather then an RS with AYC stripped - Confusing? Reason being for the GSR-spec is apparently Mitsubishi ran out of RS-spec cars and built this Zero Fighter on a late GSR-spec.

Now.. Onto the specs - The chassis not only runs lower, but on stiffer springs and dampers. The anti-roll bars are thicker and the mounts firmer. Those wheels are an inch bigger in diameter than the standard Evo VI's, and shod with 225/40 ZR17 Bridgestone S-02 tyres. There's also a cool-looking alloy strut brace between the front turrets to stiffen things up further. Other changes centre on the engine and its ancillaries. A smarter Mitsubishi Motor Sports ECU has been fitted, along with aluminium intercooler piping, a new induction system complete with mushroom-shaped air filter, a stainless Sports exhaust system and catalyst, plus lighter titanium turbo internals for improved response.

The result is a whopping 340bhp, an increase of 60bhp over the standard Evo VI, and the same as the RS Sprint. Boost pressure remains at 1.1bar, against the RS Sprint's s1.3bar setting so you're getting the same power with less stress n the internals, which has to be a good thing for a 2-litre, four-cylinder motor.
