I vote for the Si or even a nice used GSR. Does it really have to be like 250-300 hp of a car? If you're broke, you're broke. Just get decent transportation that you can mod a lil bit. Remember you can turbo any honda pretty easily and cheap. I'd go with a GSR or even a nice Type-R if you can find one (try ebay).

DO NOT DO NOT DO NOT DO NOT DO NOT DO NOT DO NOT
I made that mistake and bought a brand new one in 02. Mo. 3 they had to put in a second engine and month 13 a 3rd engine. then Lemon law happened after 9 mo. got all payments back and down pay. So now I have an evo with $10 dollars more than i was paying for my sentra. So maybe u could have the same luck, but i wouldnt do it because it was way too much stress and time consuming.

Thats has to be the biggest fluke of all time.
The SR20DE, espicially the low port intake motors on the 91-93 sentra se-r,are arguably the finest 4 cylinder engine ever made.
I've personally owned 3 of these cars, including a 91 with a turbo and have never so much as fouled a plug in one with many miles of hard abuse.
I would recommend a se-r to anyone looking for a low budget performance car.

You want cheap? Reliable? Low/No Payments?
Get a used 95-96 S14 240sx. They're being snapped up by all the wannabe dorifto kids, but you can still find one for 3-4k if you look hard enough. With some suspension and Z brakes, they handle _very_ well. They look pretty sharp, IMHO, and it beats driving a camry or a civic.
The 2.4L DOHC motor only makes 155hp stock, but has low compression. Big displacement + iron block + low compression + low output = LAST FOREVER. I have 180k miles on mine, perfect compression #s across, and I beat the hell out of it. RWD doesn't hurt either..

RSX-S, WRX, and SRT-4 all have very high insurance. Not as high an Evo, but very high nevertheless. Even my 5-7 year old Turbo Eclipses have high insurance. If I were you, I'd consider an older integra type R or GSR, get a neon DOHC and add a turbo kit, or get one of those 1999 civic Si's. Dont get a SER V-Spec, had a friend own one and it was lemoned, and the cars are just hideous to begin with. I guess it depends on how much power you are looking for, but I'd stay away from the ones I listed at the beggining because they wont be saving you too much on insurance if thats the reason for the trade-in/sale. Maybe a couple year old Maxima. 240+ hp, run forever without problem and the insurance is semi-low.
