why not just get a used old dsm, tons of parts out there for the car and its alot of bang for the buck just make sure you get one in good condition. when i had one my insurance wasnt that much at all less than $150/mo. and will cost alot less than $18000. i picked up my 2g for $2,400. then dump another 3k into it and i'm still debating if my evo is faster or not. just a thought.
