If you are going to go to the trouble of a repaint, at least do a color that will look good. The Sport Compact article where they trashed a perfectly good blue paint job was just sickening. I wish I could afford to repaint my WW Evo RS, but if I did it I'd go for something like M3 Avus Blue or Technoviolet...I guess that would be more money than a cheapo flat black job, but at least the car wouldn't look like a repaired salvage car. From a stealth standpoint, there's nothing stealth, especially to a cop, about a ghetto paint job. It screams "socially irresponsible punk inside." Maybe that's the image you want. Anyhow, love your car and your mods, but think you're on the wrong track with this one.

Okay here's my input. If you want to go flat black [do it!!!] then get it professionally done and painted as matte black. Same thing, but much better to get it done professionally.

Why do you want to destroy a perfectly good car and cut the resale value by 50%?!? To each his own...

this is an easy question to me.

if this car is your daily driver, then by no means, under any circumstance, should you paint it flat black.

if this is your evening/weekend pocket rocket, then go for it an have fun. the STI in SCC did look killer, and not "ghetto" or "trashy" as some might say. why is everyone obsessed with shiny, metallic paint? because that's all that's ever been offered?

Actually that is what I want to do, matte black not flat. I have seen this color pop-in up on a bunch of $100K street rods and if done correctly it is the bad ***. I am almost 40 so age does not factor in and as far as resale goes...I don't really care, diden't do all these mods to sell it. If I do it I will change out the lights, have the IC coated "emitter black" from Swain and have the chome logos black chromed. Nothing will be done half-assed, I have done ground up restos on everything up to a '71 Hemi Challenger that is now in the Chrysler arkives so if I do it, it will be done right We have enough mor-ons making Evo's look bad and I don't want to help

I was told at a bodyshop that flat black should not be clear coated. So, how do you maintain it???

Enjoy the paint until you are forced to paint, then go flat.

i think what he ultimately means by flat black is matte black, which i believe does have a clear coat...a matte one instead of a glossy one.

All base coat clear coat bases are flat . The clear coats can be flattened by adding
flattening agents to it. The more you add flatter it gets, doing this keeps the paint
from becoming pourse and easier to clean.Mercedes does the same thing on the
bottom of their 2 tones
