'03 Evo with 15k miles

Whats up everyone... n00b here and have a few questions about my recently obtained '03 evo. When the car is cold its almost next to impossible to get it into 2nd gear while driving. I was informed about a TSO out for the 2nd and 3rd syncros and wanted to know if this might be the cause... As for when the car has reached temp it shifts into all the gears fine but still is fairly notchy. Also there is a ton of road noise while driving. Given the Yokos that came on it I expected some but is it really suposed to that load in the cabin? Lastly the clutch seems to grab kinda high but the dealer said thats normal on these cars? Thanks in advance

Bing

BTW does Mitsu offer an aftermarket bov for the car? I ran into major warranty issues with my '02 Celica and thats what prompted the purchase of the evo. So with that said Id like to try to stick with oem performance parts

they dont offer many oem performance parts other than strut braces and brake guides...but then they void your warrenty as soon as you step out on the track

if you had a problem with warranty before with toyota, frankly mitsubishis warranties are virtually unapparent
and if you modify the car whatsoever, they (dealers/mitsu) will most likely attribute any problems to the modifications. happened to 3 local mil-town evo owners i know. If you mod the evo, your ****ed on the warranty to be blunt if, unless you change it completely back to stock (give or take a few prts) when you get it serviced !

thats what I thought everyone might say about the mods. These dealers these days wont offer any wiggle room for the consumer. But as for the clutch and tranny do I have any typical problems or are they just the nature of the car?

My tranny acts the same way. Try shifting into 2nd at higher rpm, say 2500-3500. This works very well for me when its cold and the shifter "slips" right in, no force necessary.

Yeah, its noisy. I like it.

I changed my tranny fluid to redline MT90 and it seems a LOT better in cold weather. May be the placebo effect but I thought I'd put my two cents in...

Clutch is supposed to be engaged high. My salesman told me they got it up high b/c of its rally heritage. They just slap the clutch while shifting. makes for quicker shifts up high.

The cold shifting characteristics is normal. Ive found that if you wait till the engine temp is in the "normal" range before you drive (ive only driven before normal operating temp once or twice), then the tranny is at least warm enought o shift. You can try changing tranny fluids. At 15k they should at last be checked according to the service manual.

The notchiness is normal. Most evose have it. Seems like most of the time with a lot of cars its notchy, especially 2nd, and once in a while its like a hot knife through butter. Most people attribute this to the fact that the trans oil is designed to protect the tranny gears in lieu of smooth shifting. Apparently there is a tradeoff between a good oil for gears and a good oil for synchros. Some people have had synchro grinding problems, but mostly 5th gear. If youre other synrchos are messed, you might have a bad trans from the factory or a few missed shifts dammaged them.

Road noise is normal.

Clutch position is supposed to be really high. At least thats where mitsu factory thinks it should be. I dont know enough to counter that statement....but it works for me. Just takes a sec to get used to.

I dont think there is an aftermarket bov for the GSR supported by mitsu, but you can put the MR bov on it. Heard a lot of good things about it, as opposed to a lot of other bov's that people have tried.
