The rubber thing is there to stop you from having an accident. If you remove the positive 1st instead of the negative and your wrench grounded to the strut bar you would pull a pretty good arc. good way to dammage the bar your wrench or if it sticks blow up the battery. I changed mine to plastic conduit weighs a lot less but provides good protection.

The rubber piece is there to stop arcing and a resulting engine fire in the event of a front end accident which causes the battery to contact the strut bar. When I replaced it with the Mitsu lightweight version it came with some adhesive tape which serves the same purpose as the rubber on the stocker. The installation instructions from Mitsu explain the necessity and importance of this tape/rubber piece.

Yes find a way to add the same protection to your new bar.

Better yet, just relocate the battery to the trunk...where it belongs!

true that. I want to do this so bad...

however in the event of front collision, your car could still run causing engine fire from gas leak and sparks flying all over the place.

then again, you'll stall out before anything, because of the manual transmission.
