Loud THUNK/POP on a fast 1-2 shift?
Any of you other Evo owners experience this at all? My previous cars have all been FWD so I'm not sure what to think of this. In a FWD on a hard and fast shift, you'd just chirp your tires/lose traction for a bit.
In the Evo when I do a hard and fast 1-2 shift, I get a loud thunk or *pat* sound coming from the tranny/transfer case area. Is this something all you guys get? Is it normal? Should I just shift slower?
The sound isn't too comforting, just wondering if I should avoid doing fast shifts?

I know the sound. I think its just a high hp awd turbo mitsu drivetrain sound. it happens to me every once in awhile. Try not banging 2nd so hard, try almost slipping 2nd a tiny bit.

I heard that sound when my friend took me for a ride in his Rally Red... I agree that it is a very uncomfortable sound to hear, but just as NOLIMITMOTORS said, it's a normal AWD sound.

I have this problem too. You can control it by the way you shift.
Try controlling the speed and direction of your 1-2 shift. Instead of just simply pulling as fast and hard as you can into 2nd, find out slowly how the gear likes to be pulled. Slowly pull it and feel the way the gears are shifting, not forcing it, and then do it while driving. Before you know it, you'll be used to shifting that way and can do it quite fast as any normal 1-2 shift on any other car.
Other thing is, I still think it's a problems with the syncros. But you can reset your syncros any time by yourself if they're slightly out of line. I was told while not moving, put it in 1st then, shift to 2nd, back to 1st and then put it back to neutral and that should reset it, you can do it while at a light. Do it slower though.
hope this helps. Since then, I haven't had this problem, but I know I can still reproduce it anytime though by shifting your way.

friend told me after a hard launch and hard shifts up....he realigned it by doing that. I do it all the time after a rough 1-2 shift and really seems to help.
Only problem is, it'll mess up quickly if you shift too hard again.
