the perfect launch!!!!
okay guys.....im having problem on my take offs. i want to perfect a power take off with no downsides... what i mean is no burning smell, no jerking back and forth and all the nasty things that would do to a tranny and clutch. i havent really perfect a regular take off either im either revving to high or low. cant really get that pulling feeling when the light turns green. my take offs all ways lags a little. oh yeah just to let you guys know, i know this may sound brutal but i learned how to drive stick from a o3 evo. now i have a 05 evo and thank god i did not keep my 03. anyways if anybody has any idea or tactics on how to street sweep let me know or let everyone else who is having the same problem as me. i will not be suprised if im the only one. lol!!!

there are tons of threads on this topic, about what works for different people. Just type "launch" into the search box and enjoy the reading. Doesn't the '05 come with a 5k rpm limiter when the clutch is in?

i know how you feel, just when i finally got use to and the hang of my stock clutch
i got a twin plate and i feel the like im just starting cuz the engagement is different
but im gettin the hang of it,
all i can say is practice at night at every red light you can find or stop sign practice coming off the line easy then just start giving it more gas after that start launching
just my 2

i know awd are hard to launch. but i know there is a way. i just hate it when the light turns green i have to really try not to jerk back and forth. i want to be comfortable on my lauches. because one of these days, i have a feeling that i will come across and sti and i know for a fact that we will race. its just a natural thing that happens. anybody would agree on this, and i dont think anybody here would want me to lose to an STI on just mere take offs right guys???!!! lol

i know how u feel, me personally - i dont launch, installed clutch and new transfer case personally and paranoid of breaking things. I launched it (quick-slip) once at 5k rpm against a sr20'd 240sx on a closed street with nothing around with old buildings and it felt great, but the smell of ACT clutch wasnt so great. so i tend to not launch, i just usually let cars take off all they want as long as theyre not AWD and once my turbo kicks in, its over as soon as i shift into 2nd gear, im gone even with my basic bolt ons. u'll love how the awd takes off, it feels like full boost instantly

Here is a little tip. Rev your rpm's between 2000 and 5500 on the yellow light. When the tree hits the last yellow you want to be at or around 5500 rpm's and slowly release the clutch just a little. Just enough to where you start moving and the clutch is still slipping. Keep slipping the clutch as your moving forward and you should be completely off the clutch with a second and a half from start to finish. The idea of revving between 2000 and 5500 before the launch is to build a little boost off the line. Your vacuum/boost gauge should show the needle at or close to O psi. You are in essence taking the half second it takes to pull vaccum out of the equation. After you try it a few times you will understand. You could also make a few passes as a passenger in someone who knows how to launch properly and you should be able to feel and hear the rpm's as they are slipping.
1. Rev up and down 2000-5500rpm's
2. Release the clutch about 15-20% to start slipping on last yellow (The % depends on where your clutch engages)
3.Once you get rolling a few feet keep slipping it<<(releasing it) a little more and then completely off the clutch
Launching takes only about a second or so and practice is the only way you are going to get it down. Good luck and I hope this helps.

Also launching this ^^way removes the drive train slack between gears and all moving parts that would normally chash when you launch. Honestly launching like this feels the same as a normal stop and go driving. Just a bit faster. Works great for me. I rode in my boys evo when he reved to 5grand and dumped it. I thought it had broke something. Also make sure you take time to shift smooth. the extra time you save with super fast shifts you will loose when the tc or tranny breaks.

Don't want to mess up the tranny? Don't launch your car. The evo isn't built to handle drag-style launches

Huh, I launched an 05 Evo once (note to Mitsubishi, this does not mean it was my car), just foot to the floor, make sure the tachometer is still going up at the time (hasn't hit the rev limiter and started falling), drop the clutch, the car scoots off with no fuss at all. No clutch smell, no noises, just a tiny tire scratch and go.
But I probably wouldn't make a habit of it. There are quite a few small parts in between the flywheel and the tires.
