Can reflash cause ECU failure?

Just had my '03 Evo into the dealer for a battery charging problem. I was getting an alternator light and the volt gauge was showing only 10-12 volts. The dealer said that replacing the alternator did not solve the problem. He says he finally traced it to my ECU chip which apparently has some voltage control functions. The dealer further says that that his attempt at reflashing back to factory spec did not take, and that ECU replacement is not covered by warranty because my factory ECU had been reflashed (I did get a mail-in Dynoflash several months ago). So, that's $1,000 I'll be paying. Have any of you (who have a reflash) had a problem like this where the reflash screwed up your ECU voltage control function? Sound logical to you?

If the reflash is interupted it ruins the ECU, IIRC.

In 1500 flashes I have sold thus far not one has had a voltage control issue. Also - if you were driving the car for several months without issue then suddenly your problem develops then I seriously doubt it has anything to do with the flash as in that case the problem would no doubt immediately arise. Sorry to hear of your issues, I wish you had called me for tech support before you went through this fiasco. It seems to me - just my thinking that the dealer was using the flash as an excuse. It will be interesting to see if your original complaint is resolved with the new ecu. In any event - save the old ECU - I can most likely salvage it. I would suggest rather than spending $1,000 on a new ecu from the dealer - shop about at some auto salvage yards where you can source a used ecu for about $250.

Just got off of the phone with the dealer's service person. They now say that, after further analysis, it appears the problem is not in the ECU after all, but is in the alternator. Needless to say, I'm glad to hear that. I thought I should bring all who read my thread up to date. Thanks to everyone who had input
