Why add more power....?

I know performance modifications give an edge in racing...but really...

I'm sure I'm in the minority, but here's my opinion, I'm 20 years old, been driving my evo for a year now, and I really have no burning desire to modify it. All I have is the AEM short ram intake, which helped eliminate that boost choking feel upon throttle release and added a better sound. I have evo 7 tails and the UK evo 8 badge. I'm happy...but people just keep urging me to add more power.

When I drive this thing on windy roads, which is where the evo is at it's best, I feel that my stock HP is completely sufficient. The suspension is perfect, the brakes are great. What's the deal with so many young people modifying their cars only to drive it around as a commuter or drag racing from stoplights or highway pulls. I just don't see the need. I don't take pride in beating other cars on straightaways...A little girl can add power...no skill in pulls, aside from learning to maybe launch your car, which is not what the evo is for anyway. Boring boring boring...I say all real driving skill is found in autox, rally, and road courses, or any other motorsport involving actually turning the steering wheel, adjusting throttle, brake, and clutch input.

Drag racing was cool in like...the 60s and 70s with muscle cars, GM, Ford, giant V8s.. but who the hell wants to hear turbos, blowoffs, nitrous purging at a stoplight. Japanese cars are meant to turn!

Just my opinion. Hopefully I'll get some flames and maybe someone who agrees...

btw...I'm aware this topic has most likely been discussed before. But I've been dealing with the issue lately, so I felt like speaking my mind someplace.

Well, I don't speak for everyone, but I modify my car because its fun and helps me learn more about the internals and inner-workings of my automobile.

Most people in the US like to go in a straight line, and we all don't have 100,000 for a Ferrari so we spend less to say we can beat a 100,000 vehicle for only spending 40,000 on an Evo. Americans just naturally have an "Ego"

admittedly, we have many more straight roads in the US than windy roads, so I full understand the greater popularity of drag racing....but the great part is that our car can keep up with or slam a ferrari on a twisty road course.

I do it becuase I never had a fast car when I was younger and I really dislike the bastard mustang and Camaro owners that think thier crappy domestic dooky boxes are the fastest things in the world. I also do it because I love the EVO, been a fan since 92

Well, being one who owns a mildly modified car.. After having it modified, I personally would want to return my car to stock. But in my case, I am a tinkerer, so anything I do, is for my own personal satisfaction and the challenge of doing it or the learning experience.

I don't think I have frequently used the modifications to my car as "Stick swingin material"

But I agree with you, leave it stock.. Most people really only do it to brag to others.. There really isn't anything necessary to prove.

For me, speed and power is an addiction. No matter how fast my car is or how much power it has, I seem to get use to it and eventually I want more power. It's too bad I have no $ to mod with, lol.

I've been modifying cars for 14 years now. Yes, it was much more difficult back when I started, no internet for online support, and finding people who made parts was VERY difficult. It's possible that today, people find it so easy to modify their cars, because there are so many products out there, just begging them to do so. Also, the population has grown so much and the "tuning community" has probably doubled since a decade ago, that each person is trying to "out-do" the next guy. Like someone said above, "bragging rights".

I, personally wouldn't modify an EVO a lot, maybe some minor mods (exh, intake) just to let the motor breathe better. It's a great platform in it's stock trim. Which is why my RX7 isn't modded a lot, because it's a great platform right from the factory (reliability mods are necessary though).

You know, as a teenager I read a lot about sex on the internet (pornography), and trust me, that didn't help when it came time to actually DO it.

So I can keep up with that Z06 and 911 TT on a road course... I agree that drag racing is pretty lame, but track racing is awesome, and making your car faster makes track racing more fun... That, and my car is no where near fast enough to be fun on the "twisties," it's almost boring.... almost

Most people modify their cars for drag racing purposes. Notice how they add a lot of parts at once? If you're doing other sorts of racing, you generally want the modifications to be slow and steady, building the car up to fit you as a driver. In road racing you want to learn the car, then put on modifications that support your car and driving style together. In drag racing, you want modifications to support straight line speed.

I've never modified a car. The car I had before the EVO was a Celica which I probably might have just kept and modified but it was an auto. Anyway, maybe some people get "used" to the power and just need more. I know my EVO felt like a ****ing rocket when I got it, but it just seems slow now even though apparently I'm going fast, know what I mean? I'm in need of some mods asap. . .

I think it all boils down to just what the person likes to do. It's kind of like a hobby, I use to collect baseball cards and comic books...now I like to mod if I can afford it. I personally like to see the results of the stuff I add.

To each his own or whatever floats your boat kind of nonsense...that's all it really is.
