Lanuching your EVO (with poll)?

I was just wondering how many EVO owners actually know how to launch their EVOs? How well do you launch? How long did it take you to master it or did it just naturally come for you?

1) I've mastered the launch technique in my EVO

2) I'm pretty good

3) I'm ok, but I can get better

4) I haven't been able to get the technique down yet

5) I absolutely suck

I remember reading that Dr Evo I forget his name in Japan the guy who has been developing the EVO was talking about how he was upset in reference to the rev limiter set to 5000. During this talk he stated that the best launch rpm for the EVO was 6500. At least that is what I remember...I am sure I saw it in some mag but dont remember which... Sorry

The 5k stutter launch limiter builds 8 PSI on my car... you just need to push the accelerator pedal down to get all the power you will need to avoid a bog provided the clutch grabs and lets you deliver it to the ground. If it's too much power then try different throttle levels to get 4- 6 psi of boost.

I have my technique down pat, but I now have to make sure it's reproducible with a higher degree of accuracy. I'll take mid 1.7s all day on the stock clutch at this point, since my method does not seem to shock the system nor cause any burning clutch smell.

help wartalon i tried to launch my 05 evo 8 rs jdm version i put the revs at 6000rpm then i dumped the clutch and all i get was a bog rpms fell to 2500rpm i tried to silp the clutch at 5000rpm and all i got eas a really bad smell of my clutch!!
help!!

Definitely don't dump it.

Try the feathering technique where you put the rpms around 5500-6000 at the line then SLOWLY release the clutch until you feel it start to grab, then hammer the throttle while sidestepping the clutch AFTER you feel the car start to roll. If you hammer the throttle TOO EARLY, then it will overpower the clutch and burn it up causing the clutch smell. If you time it right, you will launch hard without clutch smell and without shocking the drivetrain.

what i seen in best motoring video they launch the MR at 6,000rpm...so i guess thats the best way to launch any evo.

I don't launch my Evo ... period. I like my tranny just the way it is. Although I do beat the **** out of it on road courses.

Nice write up! The only thing im afraid of and why i dont launch is breaking the diff in the TC since i have an 03.I dont know how strong the lsd is on the 05's so it may be less stress on the tc and less change of breaking it.

I hate the stock clutch and wish they had put in a better one from the factory. With more power you need a better clutch (ACT2600 or something close) and launch at 5500rpm. That's what always works for me.

I've heard of that method b/f Warrtalon. My buddy refers to it as slingshotting out of the whole. You get about 80% of the benefit of launching an AWD car, and about 20% of the drivetrain shock. I will trade .1 on my 60' for a happy tc.

On my 05 evo I pin the Throttle to the floor and it bounces off of 5k. When it's time to take off i'll slip the clutch for a second then drop it. You gotta slip the clutch just enough to where it won't bog when you drop it. Usually you just have to get the car moving just a little bit to build up momentum so it won't bog. My friend with an 05 sti takes his to 6500 and drops it because his clutch will actually handle it and won't explode. From a launch he gets probably 1/2 a car to a car length on me. So far it worked out awesome for me. If you slip it for the perfect amount of time you won't even burn up you clutch. (Can't wait for a better clutch!!)
